DLS and I have been on quite a soup dumpling kick lately, obviously, and one of the names that comes up any time soup dumplings are mentioned is Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. I mean, it has “soup dumpling” (xiao long bao) in the name! They must be good. That and every single time I’ve tried to go, the line has been out the door, which means it must be good, right? One Tuesday night, Hungry, Cheese, TC, Noah, DLS and I headed into Flushing to see what the hype was about (though a few of us had been before). [...]
Joe’s Shanghai

One chilly December evening, DLS told me he wanted to go to Chinatown for dinner and suggested a couple of places. Since I usually am the one to give suggestions (read: pick where we eat), I really wanted to be open to his list, but one place was the recipient of a rare “not recommended” rating from me, and the other was… Joe’s Shanghai. Pardon me while I laugh into my sleeve; while I KNOW for sure that Joe’s Shanghai had its hey-day, I was not one of those who frequented the place. Partially because I could never get past [...]

After ramen, naps, and then a long, winding walk down to Chinatown, DLS and I found ourselves outside Shanghai Cafe Deluxe, where TT and Hungry went a few weeks prior. Reading that post made me really want soup dumplings (xiao long bao), so at the first opportunity to get them, I jumped. Surprisingly, there was a wait for a table at 8:30 on the night before Thanksgiving – Chinatown usually seems so empty that late at night! – but we stuck it out and got a table within 10 minutes, though there was a minute I almost threw down because [...]

I recently had the pleasure of a dinner meeting at Buddakan with Jessica, who is part of their PR team. We had fabulous service with an excellent server, but he knew ahead of time who we were, so I won’t focus on that. Let’s just talk about the food… and drink. When I saw the FATE cocktail (on the left) on the menu, I had to have it. Prosecco, pineapple, and elderflower. Yeah, pretty much tailor made for me… and I loved it. Perfectly balanced without being cloyingly sweet. Delicious. Jessica had the DREAM, which tasted like guava juice and [...]

You all should be very familiar with this photo: it is yet one more photo of David Wright’s first at-bat of a game I attended in early August. Though posting about Citi Field has become less and less frequent, I’ve continued to go to games and either eaten something I’ve posted about ad nauseum already (Mama’s hero, Box Frites…)… or this. I decided on a whim that Beer Boor and I should meet in Flushing before the game and pick up White Bear – dumplings, of course, and try their dan dan noodles, which I’ve been curious about for [...]
