Nom Wah Tea Parlor

After I’d spoken highly of Nom Wah, my girlfriends decided they wanted dim sum for dinner one night.  So after Brindle Room, I walked down towards Chinatown for some Nom Wah.  I arrived about 5 minutes late, but a miscommunication led to HB and StB ordering a ton of food before anyone else got there (they thought I’d said that the food took a while to be made).  First up, ha cheung or shrimp in rice noodle rolls.  Again, very fresh, slippery noodles… yum!  I will say they weren’t as good as last time, but still very good.  Rice crueller [...]

Nom Wah Tea Parlor

One recent night after getting my haircut, I decided I was hungry and that I should wander Chinatown to find food.  TC decided to join me, and after we’d shared two banh mi from Paris Sandwich, and then each taken down a pork chop over rice and a chicken leg over rice respectively, it suddenly occurred to me: dim sum, made to order, at New York’s oldest dim sum parlor.  Uhh… yes please?!  So we headed over to Nom Wah to indulge in what would – are you counting? – be our third dinner of the night.  Instead of dim [...]

Oriental Garden

CT mentioned to me that she was jonesing for dim sum. Back in January, we had some mediocre dim sum at Grand Harmony, so this time around we would definitely be going somewhere else. CT’s Dad was in town and he loves dim sum too. I guess that is where she gets it? I invited Aunt B along since it had been years since she ate dim sum. Since we had previously been to Golden Unicorn and Jing Fong, we decided to try somewhere new. Oriental Garden was just a few doors down from Jing Fong and CT heard good [...]

Grand Harmony

proudly displaying that B grade A commenter recently asked me to check out Grand Harmony in Chinatown after seeing it on Top Chef (which I DO NOT watch).  I asked the FBM’ers if they wanted to go, and wound up with a group of 11 on my hands.  I was worried about how crowded the place might be, so I told everyone to meet there at 9:30… which might have been the big misstep of the day.  I wound up arriving at 9:05 and snagged a big empty table for everyone… while the restaurant remained only 1/3 full.  I took [...]

Thursdays with TT: Golden Unicorn

It has been a while since our cooking class got together, so we took an opportunity to go for dim sum. It is one of the best places to go as a group. I am no longer a dim sum virgin, but there were a couple of people that were. Since they were cooking class people, we didn’t have to worry about them getting turned off by the more unique items offered. We got there early(i.e. before noon), so there wasn’t too long of a wait. Going for dim sum after 12 is just asking for trouble. The best thing [...]
