Casellula – Panna Cotta

I know you’re probably all sick of hearing about Casellula by now – I’ve been three times this year alone! – so I’ll spare the details of our meal (which was excellent per usual). But… I have to take a moment to share how much I love those who read my blog. It really tickles me when friends text me to tell me they saw xx item and it made them think of me, so when people who, for all intents and purposes, are virtual strangers do this, it just about puts me over the edge of because it’s… cute. [...]

Kyotofu

Once upon a time, I went to Kyotofu – back when it first opened. I got majorly sick and I was most displeased with the experience – plus, honestly, it’s in Hell’s Kitchen, an area I do not normally visit – until lately. After the Chambre de Sucre event where I sampled many Kyotofu goodies that I enjoyed, I decided I had to revisit. So one evening, after another dinner at Tabata, I headed over to Kyotofu with DLS and friends. Lenny ordered the warm chocolate cake with miso mochi. I know he liked it a lot because I took [...]

Casellula

Two of my greatest pleasures in life are introducing people to restaurants and food that I truly enjoy, and meeting people who love food as much as or more than I do. I was able to combine these two things recently when FS’s girl friend visited her from Chicago, by not just recommending Casellula – one of my favorite wine bars for dinner – but also joining them, where I met C, who turned out to love food. It was one of the more enjoyable conversations I’ve had with someone I’ve just met in a long time – food, girl [...]

I know I’ve mentioned Vegan Divas in the past, but I thought it is worth mentioning again for a number of reasons. They’ve been continually improving their recipes to the point where some items, you really couldn’t tell are vegan… I attended a Valentine’s party for their new items, and as you can see, the table was goodie-laden. There were cookies in the background that crumbled like sable cookies – how could there not be butter in these?! – that Francois Payard himself handed me, telling me proudly how I would not be able to tell the difference. Apparently those [...]

Manna Cafe

After Nan Xiang, I kept mumbling “I want tong yuan I want tong yuan I want tong yuan.”  This loosely translates to “I want sugar balls I want sugar balls I want sugar balls” or more accurately, in my case, I wanted mochi (rice flour dumplings) filled with black sesame paste.  It’s a treat I had occasionally while growing up – some of us were lucky enough to have parents who made them from scratch, but I’m pretty sure my mom just bought the frozen kind.  In any case, DLS was game, and Noah joined us to wander around to [...]
