Leo’s Bagels

Whenever I hear about a new place opening in the Financial District close to my office, I get excited, even though I don’t plan on being here forever (I swear it!).  I even walked down there to take pictures of the place when it first opened, but I forgot to post them cuz I don’t use Flickr and whatever.  I kind of forgot about them for a while since I’ve been focusing on bringing lunch.  But then, as usual, the lovely Daniel Krieger reminded me with a post on Midtown Lunch: Downtown Lunch that the place was open, in business, and bringing [...]

Ben’s Deli

Funny enough, I actually posted about this place almost three years ago to the day.  I say a few somewhat blasphemous things in that post, so you don’t have to click over… but it’s pretty funny seeing how far I’ve come in a short three years.  In any case, needing something to refuel in between comic-hunting and panels at Comic Con, I led BF over this way since it was fairly close by and we both do enjoy sandwiches.  I’ve taken him to one or two other locations of Ben’s as well, so this seemed a nice option, a bit [...]

A Walk down Austin Street in Forest Hills

Let’s take a walk, shall we? On any given Sunday, I take a walk up to Austin St. in Forest Hills for a few reasons.  Partially to get some exercise and fresh air, partially to check out what’s new in the area, and partially just for the heck of it.  It’s a nice brisk walk and there’s always something to buy!  First stop is always Sakura-ya, especially if I haven’t eaten lunch yet.  I like to wander around inside and browse the Japanese market for all sorts of goodies, most great for bento.  They have a small section of bento [...]

Ragtime Gourmet, Howard Beach, Queens

Some of you will probably be surprised by this: I used to live in Howard Beach. That’s right; I lived in Howard Beach for about three years, 2003-2006. This isn’t really a big deal, although I would be so bold as to suggest that Howard Beach is one of the few neighborhoods left in NY that exists almost as its own little world. (Perhaps I just haven’t been privy to any of the other little worlds of the other neighborhoods of which I’ve been a resident; somehow, I don’t think so.) If you’re from Howard Beach, and you meet another [...]

Au Bon Pain

I can’t even begin to explain to you what’s going on in Yvo-world here, and sadly for both of us, nor do I want to.  Not to sound all harsh and stuff, but, that’s the way this cookie is crumbling.  So anyway, Friday was rainy and crappy and I was worried about my tickets to that night’s ball game, which, yes, did get rained out.  I hadn’t time that morning to pack lunch, so I actually wound up wandering around looking for a deli with some decent soup selection.  Every single place I walked into only had two choices of [...]
