You all know I love Robicelli’s cupcakes. Allison and I went to high school together, but even if we hadn’t, anyone who just eats one cupcake by her will know: these are the best cupcakes in the city. On this occasion, I tried the Ebinger (the chocolate one), Pumpkin Pie (the bottom right), and Bourbon Caramel Apple (top). Hands down I liked the chocolate one the best; though I’m not often a chocolate fan, I find that the Robicellis know what it means to go easy and not slam chocolate in your face, which means the chocolate flavor is fairly [...]

Post-Vinitaly, Beer Boor and I decided to walk over to Madison Square Eats as he’d not yet been this go-round (and I’d been too many times to count). Yes, it’s long over now (I’m writing this just as it’s ended, and we went two days before it ended, but all of these items are available elsewhere, so you should heed my advice and seek out the ones I liked!) – but I write about everything I eat so it would be a failing on my part not to mention this I’ve heard so much about Roberta’s that I finally got [...]

I picked up a toasted sesame donut since it was late in the day and they were out of most everything else. Very toasty sesame in terms of flavor. Not too sweet. And a good chew to the donut. Overall, though, I wasn’t that into the donut [...]

I know, I know: my moniker doesn’t exactly scream “cupcake aficionado”. Yet I do know my way around a kitchen, so it was with happiness in my heart that I visited the first outpost of Little Cupcake Bakeshop in Manhattan, newly opened on the corner of Mott and Prince, for a press event that showcased everything good about this newest cupcake shop in the city. Through enacting a whole slew of initiatives, from local sourcing and recycled building materials to employing 100% wind power and carbon offsets, the Bakeshop strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and to that [...]
Red Velvet Cupcakes

Red velvet cakes used to scare me; I’d never seen a RED cake before but, as is my approach to life, I was willing to try it. Which was when I fell in love. So for a recent family get-together, I baked red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. I was aiming for a deep red, fine-crumbed vanilla cake with just a hint of chocolate… … Oh, who am I fooling? I dumped cocoa in there like it was going out of style! And if cocoa is really going out of fashion in your part of the world, please tell [...]
