Lan Zhou Hand Pulled Noodles

A few months ago, all the rage was hand-pulled noodles.  I hadn’t been to any place – since as I’ve mentioned, it takes me a while to get anywhere for new food trends – but recently, when it was pouring rain in the morning, and I just wanted some noodles-in-soup instead of my normal congee rainy day craving, I headed over to Lan Zhou Hand Pulled Noodles.  They were the first place I’d heard of back when the hand pulled noodles craze hit, and being only a few blocks from the congee place, I knew I could get there relatively [...]

Dream Kitchen

For a recent Birthday Bunch brunch - ANM’s – the group trooped down to Brooklyn for a HK Cafe style meal.  (Ok, in all fairness, there wasn’t much trooping; Dr. PB (formerly MD) lives in outer LI and on her way in picked up MK and I from Queens; the Manhattanites drove in and the rest of the bunch live in Brooklyn somewhere.  Since we’re scattered like so, it isn’t that big of a deal… I’m just a lazy ass.) I’ve mentioned HK cafe cuisine briefly before in a post on XO Kitchen but I’ll explain it again.  It’s what I’ve now decided [...]

Throwback… Rewind 4 Years (San Francisco)

I was digging around in my old personal blog archives and stumbled across this, from the pre-Feisty Foodie days.  I was destined to be a food blogger obviously hahaha, but I thought I’d share this anyway… it’s from a trip to San Francisco back in early February 2005.  I’ve since posted about many of these places on FF, so I added the links, but it’s cute to see how things have changed, yes?  (I also have visited SF to return to many of these places again and again…)  I also found a road trip food-rundown from the same month that [...]

January 26th marked the new lunar year.  Some people refer to this as “Chinese new year”, but really, so many cultures celebrate this that I feel it’s more fair and inclusive to refer to it as the lunar new year – the “other” new year, January 1st, marks the beginning of the solar year.  It’s all very interesting if you feel like reading up on it In any case, the tradition dictates that on the lunar new year’s eve, one must feast and feast and feast.  But not just any feast; one must feast upon certain dishes in order to [...]

A Walk down Austin Street in Forest Hills

Let’s take a walk, shall we? On any given Sunday, I take a walk up to Austin St. in Forest Hills for a few reasons.  Partially to get some exercise and fresh air, partially to check out what’s new in the area, and partially just for the heck of it.  It’s a nice brisk walk and there’s always something to buy!  First stop is always Sakura-ya, especially if I haven’t eaten lunch yet.  I like to wander around inside and browse the Japanese market for all sorts of goodies, most great for bento.  They have a small section of bento [...]
