You may remember last year when I went to Hop Kee with a bunch of friends to celebrate Lunar New Year. Well, this year, we decided to plan a little better, and go to one of my tried-and-true places – High Pearl a few days before Lunar New Year eve (when it would be super busy). (This is why I was happy Snorlax chose a different place for his birthday dinner – otherwise, I would have been here twice in 3 days, which isn’t a bad thing, but I thought I’d be repeating a lot of the same dishes.) As [...]

As it is every January, Snorlax’s birthday came and like the good big brother he is, he arranged for his birthday dinner to be the day after I returned from Montreal instead of while I was there (his birthday is suspiciously close to MLK weekend every year…). To my surprise and delight – you’ll find out why in a few days – instead of choosing his usual go-to, High Pearl, he chose Canton Gourmet, where I’d been a few times but rarely for dinner. Per usual when dining at a Cantonese restaurant with my brother, he chose to start with soup. I forget [...]

Another Lunar New Year has passed, which means it’s time for me to start writing my Lunar New Year posts… Well, first up is the night before Lunar New Year. This is about the only time of year I ever really pay attention to the Asian portion of my culture; maybe because it’s so food-centric it’s hard to not want to be part of the fun! A few friends and I decided to meet up and attempt to celebrate what we knew… Unfortunately, I randomly Google’d “Cantonese restaurant Chinatown” instead of forcing them to travel to Queens to Cantonese restaurants [...]

After a couple of hours at the batting cages, BF and I had sufficiently worked up an appetite – despite my brunch – and met up with BlindBaker plus BF’s former coworker, JP (I don’t know why I referred to him as this in a previous post - one of the downsides to using initialed nicknames constantly) and his wife, VSa, to grab some food. JP and VSa wanted to hit up Congee Village in Chinatown, which caused both BlindBaker and I to cringe internally, but I decided to put my gameface on and put aside my prejudices. (With a name like [...]

For my brother’s recent birthday, we went to High Pearl. High Pearl, which I may or may not have mentioned before, is the place my family goes to consistently. I mean, since the time I was 10 or younger. I’ve eaten here so many times over the years, but I can honestly say I haven’t eaten the entire menu because we usually don’t switch up our order too much. (I did, however, come here with friends a few times, and my friends order such totally, completely different dishes, it was really amazing.) Shark’s Fin soup. Please don’t tell me about [...]
