A few weeks ago, I said to FeistySis via BBM, “Hey, do you want to make a cake for my birthday?” She didn’t hesitate (much) before saying sure, and I asked if i could come over and watch. She’d actually made cupcakes from scratch for the first time at Baby B’s bday party and I’d liked them insomuch as they weren’t very sweet, and came out very moist. In any case, I headed over to her house late Saturday night and watched her work at the cake. Of course, the translation from cupcake to cake sometimes takes a little work… Luckily, [...]

After Marea, Convivio and Daniel, my total sat solidly at 5 Michelin stars. But where would I go for the 6th and final star? I hate making decisions. Thankfully, the choices were narrowed for me as my awesome friend StB emailed me about taking me out for my birthday. Scheduling is a nightmare with a group of busy girls, so brunch was the best option, and only some places offer brunch… a list was culled, then further cut down as availability on short notice made tables disappear. Finally, we were left with Wallse, a cute Austrian restaurant in the West [...]

With my goal of 6 Michelin stars in the month of October for my birthday, it was clear something big needed to happen, and soon. Then, the realization dawned on me, very slowly, that I’d yet to eat high end French food. In fact… I don’t even eat much French food at all. The pieces came together: I would add 3 Michelin stars to the pile by visiting one of the few restaurants on that list – most of them being French (one exception). Le Bernardin was brought up, but reservations are incredibly difficult to procure. Per Se’s philosophy offended [...]

As I mentioned yesterday, I sought to reach 6 Michelin stars in the month of October. Continuing that trend, we returned to Convivio since we’d so enjoyed it in April when we’d gone and sat in the lounge. This time, reservations were secured for the day of my birthday in the main dining room, which… pleasantly turned out to be lit well (I wouldn’t say brightly, but well enough that I wasn’t squinting and my pictures aren’t blurry dark blobs like last time!). Waiting at our table was a sealed envelope that said simply, “The [BF's last name] Party” – [...]

Sometimes I get a crazy notion in my head for my birthday, and forget that execution isn’t always as easy as saying “I want to do that” – but that’s where I realize I have the most amazing friends ever. What was this year’s idea? To hit 6 Michelin stars in the month of October. First up, lunch at Marea, which has 1 star this year, but 2 stars for 2011. Let’s see if it lives up to that; I’d really enjoyed Convivio when I went earlier this year, and Marea boasts the same executive chef. The brightly lit [...]
