Sometimes, I meet people that I think are awesome and make an effort to befriend them. (As StB says, there are three types of friends in life: the kind you wanted to make, the kind who wanted to be friends with you, and the kind that just happen.) I met Felicia a while ago, and always liked her, but the way life happens, time got away from me before I reached out and said, “Hey, let’s hang out.” I’m glad I did though – she likes eating as much as I do, and even enjoys theater – one of my [...]

As mentioned in yesterday’s post, I had a birthday dinner to attend – at 10 Downing. This unfortunately is a case of awkward service nearly completely ruining a perfectly tasty meal – I’m being generous with my description, because I was incredibly upset that night with our service (and I wasn’t alone). Our server was perfectly pleasant – when she’d bother to pay attention to us. We were a table of 10, so her gratuity was included… but that is never an excuse for her to just completely ignore us. It took forever for her to take our order – [...]

A couple weeks ago, we headed to South Jersey for a friend’s son’s first birthday party. After we had our fill of Elmo and Cookie Monster, we headed back up north to drop off my Dad’s car (who graciously let us borrow it.) Before heading back to NYC, my parents took us out to dinner to one of their favorite restaurants of the moment. Bistro 18 in Montclair, New Jersey was a small, cozy “New American” restaurant right in the heart of the hip town that Stephen Colbert calls home. After being seated, bread service included some eggplant caponata. I [...]
Au Pied de Cochon
When it was first decided that DLS and I were going to Montreal, there was only one place I wanted to visit. I first heard of this place in 2008 through this blog post – and it stuck in my head since then. I don’t even know what, exactly, in that post made me want to eat here desperately, but whenever Montreal has been suggested to me, I’ve thought of Au Pied de Cochon. DLS made reservations for our last evening in Montreal, and though I felt a little sick after overindulging (bagels, poutine, deli sandwiches, and then snacks in [...]
Almond

Themes. I like themes. Even more than that, I like when my friends come up with themes as reasons to have dinner together… like ‘sparkling & escargots’ – which brought Hungry, Sarah and I together recently at Almond. I’d enjoyed myself at the Dolce Gusto event the month previous, so it was a no-brainer when we needed a place for sparkling & escargots. First order of business: sparkling. I wanted a sparkling rose, and there was only one on the list, so we got this one. I enjoyed it even though Sarah didn’t seem to as I found it bright, [...]
