Gyu Kaku

Gyu Kaku

Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking, so it was one Friday night that DLS and I found ourselves at a local Japanese BBQ place, the recently opened third NYC location of Gyu Kaku. Per usual, DLS wanted Pellegrino. I opted for a strawberry lemonade, but when I’d reached the halfway mark, I added Pellegrino for a bit of sparkle. I love sparkling drinks, that’s just me. After a lot of debate – not knowing what to get, and just wanting a large sampler of everything, we finally settled on one of the set menus for two – the Hanabi [...]

Miss Korea BBQ

Miss Korea BBQ

Sometimes, DLS decides he wants to eat a particular dish, and he tasks me with finding that dish at a restaurant. Sure, I can do that, and this time it was super easy: Korean style beef tartare or yukhwe, which, you may recall, I accidentally ordered for BeerBoor once upon a time at BCD Tofu House. Unfortunately – especially because I really enjoyed BCD for their soondubu (soft tofu stew) – BCD has since closed its location in Koreatown, so I had to scramble and find another place… which I did, with Chris’s help… but then that place turned out [...]

Southern Hospitality – Hell’s Kitchen

Southern Hospitality – Hell’s Kitchen

I get invitations for all sorts of fun things frequently. It’s part of the benefit of not only maintaining my own blog and having an audience that reads what I write, but also, living in a large city like NYC (okay, the largest in the country, but I’ll stop bragging now). Sometimes I just can’t attend all the events, or they just don’t pertain to the blog in a way that I could feel comfortable attending an event simply for swag… so I decline out of respect for other people who might want to go. Well, I was recently invited [...]

John Brown Smokehouse

John Brown Smokehouse

After I posted about John Brown Smokehouse many months ago, my friends really wanted to go check it out. After a false start, we rescheduled for just after the New Year, and traveled 4 strong to the remote location in Long Island City. Coincidentally, we were there the same night Frommers was there checking it out… Dean way over-ordered; cole slaw, burnt ends, lamb chops, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, collards… We each got our own trays overflowing with food, but since I hadn’t yet tried the mac & cheese, I took a photo of TC’s m&c and tried a bite.  [...]

Daisy May’s BBQ

Daisy May’s BBQ

Sometimes life just doesn’t go quite the way you planned – so it was one December Friday when TC and I headed to Philly and instead wound up at Daisy May’s in Hell’s Kitchen.  As you can see from that post I linked, we both went earlier in the year and found it lacking.  However, this time around, with our creamed spinach, mac&cheese, cheesy corn, collard greens, sweet & sticky ribs and dry rub… we were both really pleased.  I really enjoyed my cheesy corn, collard greens, and sweet & sticky ribs, while TC liked his dishes as well.  The [...]
