Cooking for DLS pt 4

Cooking for DLS pt 4

Remember those Safe Eggs I posted about a while back? Ever since then, I’d had a hankering to make spaghetti alla carbonara. When I discovered DLS had never had it – didn’t even know what it was – I knew what I had to do. Make spaghetti alla carbonara!  I picked up a package of already cubed pancetta from Trader Joe’s, and beat a few eggs with salt/pepper and cheese that isn’t in the picture (I used piave).  The matzoh crackers in the background are because I also made salted caramel chocolate covered matzoh sandwiches… yum. While some of the [...]

Brunch by Simply Orange

Brunch by Simply Orange

Last month, Yvo invited me along to the “Brunch by Simply Orange” event at The Institute for Culinary Education aka ICE. I have seen Simply Orange in stores and once bought its “Simply Limeade” to drink with lunch. I enjoyed it a lot, so I was interested to see what they would be promoting. I have also taken a bunch of cooking classes at ICE and consider it the best recreational cooking school in NYC. Yvo heard from the PR person that I would be the only guy at the class. As if that would scare me. I held my [...]

Earl Grey Tea Cookies

I realize I usually reserve recipes for Recipe Fridays, but I have been baking so much lately that I have room for way more recipes!  I did promise over a year ago that eventually the site was going to switch over to more recipes and less restaurants… perhaps I’m finally making good on that promise?    Plus, it’s a Monday… perhaps a particularly sweet one for you, perhaps not… either way, it’s the perfect time for a little treat.  the dough, just as it’s come togetherI was browsing around in a bookstore recently and stumbled on a recipe for what [...]

Recipe Fridays: Waffle Sandwiches!

Recipe Fridays: Waffle Sandwiches!

What?  What’s wrong with my waffle maker?  Oh… right.  I don’t have one.  Those are miniature plastic food items.  A while back, I visited Mitsuwa and was lured into buying miniature foods.  I think they’re for doll houses; I don’t know.  They’re blind packs, meaning you don’t see what you get until you buy it then open it, and I was disappointed that the two I got were things I don’t eat or make often at all.  Breakfast.  Wah wah wah.  I put them aside and recently turned them up again while cleaning my apartment.  This one included a recipe for [...]

Recipe Fridays: Raisin Bran Muffins

Recipe Fridays: Raisin Bran Muffins

So I got a bug in my butt to start baking, and I received a brand new cookbook for Christmas (well, I received an Amazon GC, which I then used to buy myself a cookbook).  It turns out… I CAN bake.  These came out alright.  I was pretty amazed anyway.  BF thought they were OK, but he ate them days after they were fresh, so that probably affected the outcome… I enjoyed mine toasted with a smear of butter on the inside.  Nice crumb, good flavor.  I guess they were healthy, but they didn’t taste it, so that’s good…Since I [...]
