Taste Good

Taste Good

I’ve been on a huge Malaysian kick since the Malaysia Kitchen rendang cookoff (and at this writing actually have plans to visit another Malaysian restaurant tonight!). As such, I tapped TC to join me at Taste Good in Elmhurst, which is actually next door to a restaurant I frequent, but had never visited. Our first dish was roti canai, of course, though we were surprised when the waitress asked us how many. Since I always order one and it’s enough for everyone to share, we said one, but when it came I think I understood: instead of thin, stretchy pancake [...]

Engeline’s

Engeline’s

A couple months back, I posted about a delicious dinner CT & I had at the relatively new Filipino restaurant, Sa Aming Nayon. After reading the post, our friend TC suggested we all go out to Woodside, Queens which has a large Filipino population and hence a bunch of Filipino restaurants. Since I have a new appreciation of this cuisine I was excited to have some more that would most likely be even cheaper in the outer boroughs as opposed to Manhattan. He suggested we go to Engeline’s. It ended up being a small group of just four of us. [...]

High Pearl – Lunar New Year

High Pearl – Lunar New Year

You may remember last year when I went to Hop Kee with a bunch of friends to celebrate Lunar New Year. Well, this year, we decided to plan a little better, and go to one of my tried-and-true places – High Pearl a few days before Lunar New Year eve (when it would be super busy). (This is why I was happy Snorlax chose a different place for his birthday dinner – otherwise, I would have been here twice in 3 days, which isn’t a bad thing, but I thought I’d be repeating a lot of the same dishes.) As [...]

Sik Gaek

Sik Gaek

As you may have realized by now from reading my blog, I adore Hungry. So when her birthday came around, I asked her where she’d like to go. She said Sik Gaek, gave me a guest list, and I happily planned a large group outing to this mystical place where you can eat live octopus, other live sea creatures, and Anthony Bourdain had once visited (so I’m told; I don’t watch that show). Do note that we went to the one in Sunnyside, because it’s closer to public transportation than the one in East Flushing. We wound up a group [...]

Canton Gourmet

Canton Gourmet

As it is every January, Snorlax’s birthday came and like the good big brother he is, he arranged for his birthday dinner to be the day after I returned from Montreal instead of while I was there (his birthday is suspiciously close to MLK weekend every year…).  To my surprise and delight – you’ll find out why in a few days – instead of choosing his usual go-to, High Pearl, he chose Canton Gourmet, where I’d been a few times but rarely for dinner. Per usual when dining at a Cantonese restaurant with my brother, he chose to start with soup. I forget [...]
