5 Burro

5 Burro

I’ve written about 5 Burro a number of times in the past – but thought I’d dash off another post because I tried something new this time. I met up with Snorlax and FeistyMom one random Saturday afternoon for lunch, and we were seated quickly by the windows. Snorlax was raving about the mussels, so we decided to get that to start… Really observant readers may have noticed that I don’t eat mussels with any regularity. I’m just not a huge fan – and I’ve tried them at many places, but the drying, mealy crumbly texture always puts me off. [...]

5 Burro Cafe (Brunch)

5 Burro Cafe (Brunch)

What do people in NYC do on Sunday mornings?  They have brunch, of course.  DLS and I headed to one of my neighborhood staples, 5 Burro Cafe, one December Sunday morning, because I’d been curious about the brunch there for quite a while.  DLS ordered the Western omelet, which he liked.  (And yes, I teased him for ordering what I thought was the least Mexican dish on the menu.)  I’ve enjoyed huevos rancheros at many places in the past, so I saw no reason not to get these here.  Well, the rancheros sauce here – the red underneath my eggs [...]

Sushi Yasu

Sushi Yasu

I love my neighborhood for too many reasons to list, good food being one of the top ones… and food good enough for other people to leave their boroughs to visit my neighborhood is definitely included in that.  In all fairness, I suppose I sort of coerced DLS to come to Forest Hills, but the promise of very good, fresh sushi, is a great enough reason, isn’t it?  Sushi Yasu has to be the best sushi place in my area – I easily rank it up among the Manhattan places in terms of freshness – but I hadn’t been since [...]

Just Like Mother’s

Just Like Mother’s

When I first moved back to Forest Hills, I did an intense search to find what places I should visit in my neighborhood.  I found a plethora of places that I’ve explored casually over the years, but one such place that eluded me until now was Just Like Mother’s.  I’m not sure why, but the address was hard for me to find at first, and then I just simply forgot about the place.  However, when my godbro recently called me, lost in Forest Hills and unable to find his way to his appointment, I looked up the address on Google [...]

Danny Brown Wine Bar & Kitchen

Danny Brown Wine Bar & Kitchen

I’ve written about Danny Brown Wine Bar in the past, but it was worth a return visit and definitely worth a second post after I went with my friend TA.  We decided to split a meat & cheese platter – TA’s affinity for stinky cheeses and my less than fondness for them resulted in the stinky blue being closest to him (bleu d’auvergne), the idiazabal (lightly smoked sheep’s milk semi hard) in the middle, and then the cremeux de bourgogne being closest to me.  Good thing, as that could be my new favorite cheese… buttery soft, like the best cream [...]
