Manna Cafe

Manna Cafe

After Nan Xiang, I kept mumbling “I want tong yuan I want tong yuan I want tong yuan.”  This loosely translates to “I want sugar balls I want sugar balls I want sugar balls” or more accurately, in my case, I wanted mochi (rice flour dumplings) filled with black sesame paste.  It’s a treat I had occasionally while growing up – some of us were lucky enough to have parents who made them from scratch, but I’m pretty sure my mom just bought the frozen kind.  In any case, DLS was game, and Noah joined us to wander around to [...]

Tuesdays with TT: Shanghai Tide

Tuesdays with TT: Shanghai Tide

To continue our culinary staycation of 2011, we planned to go for hot pot in Flushing. It had been a couple years since CT & I last went and were waiting for winter to kick in for it to be hot pot weather. Unfortunately, we missed the FBM hot pot outing last year at Shanghai Tide, so we organized another outing during Christmas week. Unfortunately we had a smaller group than usual, but c’est la vie. Fortunately for us, the restaurant was pretty quiet since most people were smart enough to stay home. Not only was it cold, but it [...]

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao

DLS and I have been on quite a soup dumpling kick lately, obviously, and one of the names that comes up any time soup dumplings are mentioned is Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao.  I mean, it has “soup dumpling” (xiao long bao) in the name!  They must be good.  That and every single time I’ve tried to go, the line has been out the door, which means it must be good, right?  One Tuesday night, Hungry, Cheese, TC, Noah, DLS and I headed into Flushing to see what the hype was about (though a few of us had been before).  [...]

White Bear

White Bear

You all should be very familiar with this photo: it is yet one more photo of David Wright’s first at-bat of a game I attended in early August.  Though posting about Citi Field has become less and less frequent, I’ve continued to go to games and either eaten something I’ve posted about ad nauseum already (Mama’s hero, Box Frites…)… or this.  I decided on a whim that Beer Boor and I should meet in Flushing before the game and pick up White Bear – dumplings, of course, and try their dan dan noodles, which I’ve been curious about for [...]

New World Mall

New World Mall

This is another long overdue post; for a while everyone was talking about New World Mall, and kept asking me to go with them.  Sure… why not?  And so I went and took scads of photos.  Some random shots around the food court.  This isn’t a real mall – there are hardly any retail stores upstairs.  The food court takes up a ton of room.  By the way, cell phone reception down there is awful. The first time I went, StB and I decided to split some things.  She went to Lan Zhou Hand Made Noodle – I wondered if [...]
