Pho Bang

Pho Bang

Before I left for Peru, a friend asked me for a quick education into Vietnamese food.  I’m no expert on Vietnamese food, but I do know what I like, and what I like is Pho Bang.  Especially on either a very hot day when you barely want to eat, or on a very cold day when you want to eat something that warms you to your core.  (I keep forgetting to take pictures when I go during the winter… so here’s another summer Vietnamese post!)Per usual, start off with an order of summer rolls.  No, they’re not fried, but instead [...]

Penang (Elmhurst)

Penang (Elmhurst)

I’ve posted about Penang in the past because it’s right around the corner from the Asian grocery store I frequent – I sometimes stop by after grocery shopping for a quick bite or to pick something up to go home.  On this occasion, I actually tried to go to Pho Bang, but it was packed, so I turned around and led the way to the surprisingly empty Penang.  Since my friend wasn’t too familiar with Malaysian cuisine, I decided to commandeer the ordering.  I’d just finished showing him around the Asian market and unlocking the world of cheap-Asian-grocers, so I [...]

Mi Tio

Mi Tio

I actually wrote about Mi Tio a while ago (over 4 years ago now), but recently returned to see if it was still worth all the fond memories I have of this place.  As I mention in that post, I’ve been going to this place since my father was still alive.  It used to be a very small, hole-in-the-wall, family oriented joint; it doesn’t seem to have changed much from that save the ‘hole-in-the-wall’ description, as it’s expanded quite a bit in the past 10+ years and looks almost fancy.  Almost.  In any case, the prices have changed only [...]

High Pearl

High Pearl

For my brother’s recent birthday, we went to High Pearl.  High Pearl, which I may or may not have mentioned before, is the place my family goes to consistently.  I mean, since the time I was 10 or younger.  I’ve eaten here so many times over the years, but I can honestly say I haven’t eaten the entire menu because we usually don’t switch up our order too much.  (I did, however, come here with friends a few times, and my friends order such totally, completely different dishes, it was really amazing.)  Shark’s Fin soup.  Please don’t tell me about [...]

Pho Bang: Elmhurst, Queens, NY

My family and I have been going to Pho Bang, which I mentioned briefly here, for years and years- and years.  In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s the first place I ever even had Vietnamese food.  I was about 15 and I’m not really sure how my parents started going here, but we did, and once I got to the age where I never wanted to eat with the family (stupid, stupid me! When you eat with Mom & Dad, THEY pay! haha), I realized quickly that this place was totally cheap enough to eat frequently with friends.  [...]
