5 Burro

5 Burro

I’ve written about 5 Burro a number of times in the past – but thought I’d dash off another post because I tried something new this time. I met up with Snorlax and FeistyMom one random Saturday afternoon for lunch, and we were seated quickly by the windows. Snorlax was raving about the mussels, so we decided to get that to start… Really observant readers may have noticed that I don’t eat mussels with any regularity. I’m just not a huge fan – and I’ve tried them at many places, but the drying, mealy crumbly texture always puts me off. [...]

Ihawan

Ihawan

After TC had taken the troops to Engeline’s for Filipino food,  I really wanted to give it a shot. One random day, post running some errands (I’m not even sure what I did, actually), he met up with me to introduce me properly to the cuisine. Since my weight’s been dropping drastically, I allowed myself a special drink. He had mango juice – on the left – and said it was just like canned, but I had canteloupe juice, which was light and refreshing, but best of all, contained long strips of fresh canteloupe that I enjoyed slurping up through [...]

Minni’s Shabu Shabu

Minni’s Shabu Shabu

Sometimes I plan to be active, but it doesn’t work out. Yes, mini-golf counts as being active! and we tried very hard to hit two different courses near me, but it just didn’t work out as one was closed because the season hasn’t started yet, and the other one… it was too late (ahem, and that is why I said 4pm is too late!).  Anyway, despite our non-exercise of driving around in frustration, we decided to grab dinner in Flushing since we were nearby … sort of … before heading into Manhattan to meet friends for dessert at Spot Dessert [...]

Penang

Penang

As I’ve mentioned a few times now, I’m on a really big Malaysian kick – dragging TC and DLS along with me to various Malaysian restaurants around the city. This time, TC and I returned to Penang – where we’ve both been multiple times in the past – and ordered some different dishes. For TC, har mee or udang mee, which was not spicy enough and not nearly as red as the version seen at Satay.  He thought it was only OK, sadly. An order of roti canai, as is my usual. Crisp, pillowy, chewy, and just all around great, [...]

Satay

Satay

As I mentioned, I have been on a real Malaysian kick lately. I suggested one night that we head to Satay, where I’d been once very many years ago, and DLS was game for the quick drive from my place to the East Flushing location. Our meal started with an order of roti canai, a thin, crepe-like pancake that, when done well, is chewy, soft, but crispy in spots. This was definitely a very good roti, served with a side of slightly spicy curry for dipping. For veggies, we ordered green beans with belacan, a dried shrimp paste that is extremely [...]
