When it was announced that Neely’s was opening in the Merchant’s space, KC was very excited as it’s in her ‘hood. Beer Boor was even more excited apparently, as he made haste and went just as soon as it opened. KC made reservations for a group of us to go about a month into their life, to wait out the kinks and let things shake out the way they might. So it was in early August FBM gathered for a meal there. KC and I were first to arrive, so we took seats at the bar to wait for the [...]

With Second Avenue subway construction well underway in the East 70s, a lot of businesses are struggling. Add scaffolding over your restaurant to the mix and it’s a real challenge. What that means to me, is a compelling reason to try a restaurant in my neighborhood that I’ve been told to visit for many months. Mingala is probably the only Burmese restaurant left in Manhattan. After its sister location closed in the East Village, my friend CC — partially Burmese herself — recommended the Upper East Side outpost, so (eventually) off we went. No outside photo due to the scaffold [...]

When a door closes, another one opens. Right? When the best pizza in your neighborhood leaves, you can only hope for something at least as good. So when Toscano’s quickly took Totonno’s place, keeping the coal-fired pizza oven, SK and I headed over to check out if this was in fact the case. Inside it’s only a little different; the chairs might be updated — might — but the tin-topped tables remain. However, the menu is more oriented toward appetizers and signature pizzas instead of choose-your-own-toppings ordering, but it’s still a pizzeria at heart. Intriguingly, the menu at the restaurant [...]

I love eating barbecue in New York. There’s no shortage of it here any more, but there hasn’t been decent barbecue on the Upper East Side, near home, since Pearson’s left 70th Street many years ago. So my excitement was pretty obvious when Pat and Gina Neely of Memphis, buoyed by their Food Network fame, announced a partnership with the folks behind Merchants NY to transform the restaurant on the corner of 62nd and 1st Avenue into Neely’s Barbecue Parlor, New York’s newest barbecue house. I had the opportunity with my friend, PS, to visit five days after its inaugural [...]
Yuka – All You Can Eat Sushi

A very long time ago, a friend of mine raved constantly about Yuka for all you can eat sushi. I eventually made the trek, and posted about it, but the food blogger I was when I wrote that post and the food blogger I am now pretty much aren’t on speaking terms. In fact, part of me sometimes looks at my early food writing and thinks I should go back and either rewrite everything or revisit places to get a better idea of what’s up – especially those places I review poorly – but the rest of me thinks “Yo, [...]
