Capsuoto Freres

For one of my last meals before going (temporarily) meatless, I headed over to Capsuoto Freres with the gang of (mostly) foodie friends, where we celebrated StB’s exciting news (which is hers to share with the blogosphere, if she so chooses, when she so chooses, ie, not my place to tell).  She’d read that this place had amazing souffles, and we were all eager to try the food.
As it turns out, Capsuoto Freres is in the middle of nowhere in northwestern TriBeCa.  I’ve been called out on this blog before for what I consider acceptable/convenient in terms of location, but [...]

Nobu

Recently, my boyfriend and I took his mother (MIL) out for dinner at Nobu as a belated Christmas present.  He actually chose the restaurant without any consultation from me, so it came as a pleasant surprise that he chose Nobu.  If you’ve read my blog much at all – especially in years past, not so much in recent times – I have made it explicitly clear how much I adore this particular style of food; not quite fusion but not quite strictly “authentic” Japanese, blending notes from a few cuisines and cooking techniques across the board – I am [...]

Papatzul… again

Today’s a day of quickie posts… hope y’all don’t mind, but you’re getting more posts, so hopefully that makes up for it???
Well, after I liked Papatzul so much, I wanted to go back for that crispy fish, lightly dressed with that tangy crema, shredded cabbage, and yummy guacamole.  And you know, ideally, a critic should go to a place more than once to really get a feel for it and before casting true judgment on it.  But I’m not a paid critic.  I don’t have an expense account, my waistline suffers enough as is from the places I do go, [...]

"Stalking" Ed Levine: Papatzul

I know… how many people can I stalk simultaneously, really?  (Hint: in addition to these two, there’s a certain baseball player whose apartment I can be spotted outside on home game nights… I’m just kidding.  Really!)  To be honest, though, after the excellent food I had following his review on La Nacional, I decided Mr. Levine couldn’t steer me wrong.  So I started making a list; whenever he posted a positive review that sounded like something I’d enjoy, the restaurant went on my list.
Papatzul is the first I got to, snagging Linguine along for the ride.

Being the extreme dork [...]

Matsugen

Tons of hype surrounded the opening of this restaurant.  Lots of blogger reviews, lots of official reviews, and last Wednesday, Bruni himself dropped 3 stars on the new joint venture by Jean-Georges Vongrichten and the Matsuhisa brothers of Japan.  So I’m not going to tell you about the great light in the restaurant, the high ceilings, the attentive service; these are all things you expect from a restaurant of this caliber.  We’re just here to talk about the food, mm’k?

Well, one gratuitous shot of the interior communal table.  This shot has been in tons of pubs already, and done much [...]
