Zutto

Zutto

After a day of shopping, I met up with Tommy to grab a bite to eat. I left the choice up to him, so he went with Zutto. We started with the Maryland roll – avocado, lump crab, tuna and caviar. I wasn’t too thrilled with the roe being on the side like that, but took to dipping my pieces in it… this was OK. I was hoping for something more interesting based on the description, but it was just… okay. Tommy ordered a spicy ramen. He liked it. There was a sign on the wall that explained ramen and [...]

Takahachi Bakery

Takahachi Bakery

Takahachi’s long been on my radar, but I finally was able to grab some goodies with DLS before our dinner at Wu Liang Ye, to be enjoyed afterwards. For $1, I picked up a container of black sesame croutons. I think they just use leftover black sesame bread that they haven’t been able to sell and cut it for croutons – that’s perfectly fine by me, I really enjoyed the crunch of these and the subtle black sesame flavor. DLS chose a green tea macaron, which boasted lots of green tea flavor but lacked the crisp crack of the shell [...]

Blaue Gans

Blaue Gans

It’s that time of year again – HB’s birthday!  Lots of reasons to celebrate; this time, the Birthday Brunch Bunch gathered at Blaue Gans.  I was a little nervous when I noticed that it’s the same chef as Wallse, where HB and the FC took me last year for my birthday, and we didn’t really like the food.  The menus are pretty similar too, but I decided to go in with an open mind.  As soon as I sat down, I was handed a cocktail menu – and of course had to order the Grapefruit Soften.  Soften = Elderflower, and [...]

Bubby’s Pie Company

Bubby’s Pie Company

I’m on a search for the best fried chicken in the city.  I’ve talked about fried chicken so many times here, and noted that I’ve yet to find truly amazing fried chicken.  I’ve gone on a Fat Chick Fried Chicken Feast, and things still came up short.  I’ve been to the lauded Hill Country Chicken but it just doesn’t impress me… In any case, I decided to revisit a place where I’d thought the food was OK, but a friend had mentioned the fried chicken being good, when I found out they stay open 24 hours (except on Mondays, when [...]

Pelea Mexicana

Pelea Mexicana

For another happy hour gathering recently, my friend Cookie suggested this place she’d heard of that did all you can eat tacos from 5-7pm, Pelea Mexicana.  I rounded up the usual suspects and we rolled into the joint seven deep.  Yeah, I said “rolled into the joint seven deep” – problem?!    While we were browsing the menu, three types of salsa and a basket of crisp tortilla chips were placed in front of us.  The chips were not stale – a recent pet peeve of mine when munching on this sort of snack – and the salsas ranged in [...]
