One weekday, I discovered I had an early afternoon appointment in the city right near DLS‘s office. When I mentioned this to him, he suggested I come in a bit early and have lunch with him, and I let him pick the place. Unsurprisingly, he chose Chinese… a place he’d been to previously and enjoyed. Since we ordered three lunch specials (his choice! really, I’m not the reason he’s gaining weight!), we had our choice of appetizers. Mediocre spring rolls that he liked and insisted I try a bite before judging (yup, still mediocre, with lackluster filling), his wonton soup [...]

I was recently alerted to the existence of a fairly cool concept made real: group dining made easy via the internet, aka gDine. Essentially, when you’re planning a group outing, just choose your restaurant and have people go to the website and pay for their own meal upfront. No more trying to calculate the bill at the end, with some people drinking and some people not, and some people saying “Oh I forgot to bring cash” or anything silly like that. (Admittedly, my friends don’t seem to have this problem, but we’ve also been dining together for well over 10 [...]

Two of my greatest pleasures in life are introducing people to restaurants and food that I truly enjoy, and meeting people who love food as much as or more than I do. I was able to combine these two things recently when FS’s girl friend visited her from Chicago, by not just recommending Casellula – one of my favorite wine bars for dinner – but also joining them, where I met C, who turned out to love food. It was one of the more enjoyable conversations I’ve had with someone I’ve just met in a long time – food, girl [...]

I get all sorts of fun alerts for cool food events around the city, but when I saw one for all you can eat meatballs I had to tell TC and Goats, who immediately decided to go and check out Casa Nonna for the deal. For $35, they received a plate of pasta, a carafe of their choice of house wines, and plates of meatballs, 5 at a time. I opted not to join in as I was planning a meal for afterwards, but I watched in amazement as TC took down 21 meatballs, Goats hit 17 and Abby valiantly [...]

Before it closed, I gathered a group of friends to go see Chinglish. If you don’t know what that is, it’s okay – it was a Broadway play written by David Henry Hwang that closed at the end of January. (I briefly mentioned going to see one of his other plays, Yellowface, here.) Of course, you can’t go to the theater on an empty stomach, so I picked Toloache for its proximity to the theater – plus I’d heard good things. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, there was some sort of mix up that wasn’t explained to me, as the [...]
