Gyu Kaku

Gyu Kaku

Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking, so it was one Friday night that DLS and I found ourselves at a local Japanese BBQ place, the recently opened third NYC location of Gyu Kaku. Per usual, DLS wanted Pellegrino. I opted for a strawberry lemonade, but when I’d reached the halfway mark, I added Pellegrino for a bit of sparkle. I love sparkling drinks, that’s just me. After a lot of debate – not knowing what to get, and just wanting a large sampler of everything, we finally settled on one of the set menus for two – the Hanabi [...]

Seattle’s Best

A while back, Seattle’s Best sent me a gift card for a drink. I finally got to the one location in NYC – in Manhattan Mall – and asked the lone barista to make me his favorite drink. We got to chatting and he mentioned that Starbucks owns them. That doesn’t bother me – I’m a Starbucks recovered addict (due to lack of funds, haha) – but I found it interesting that the line up of drinks seemed fairly different. He wound up making me a caramel macchiato type drink, iced, which I found overwhelmingly too sweet even after I [...]

Hyo Dong Gak

Hyo Dong Gak

A couple Fridays ago, CT and I were relaxing at home after another long week of work when it came time to think about what to do for dinner. I made the decision that we should skirt the norm and actually go out to get something to eat. I suggested a quick, casual meal at one of my favorite Korean restaurants, Han Bat, but CT wasn’t really in the mood for pajeon and bibimbap. I then suggested getting Korean-Chinese next door to Han Bat at Hyo Dong Gak. They specialize in a noodle dish called jjajjungmyun. It was almost two [...]

Miss Korea BBQ

Miss Korea BBQ

Sometimes, DLS decides he wants to eat a particular dish, and he tasks me with finding that dish at a restaurant. Sure, I can do that, and this time it was super easy: Korean style beef tartare or yukhwe, which, you may recall, I accidentally ordered for BeerBoor once upon a time at BCD Tofu House. Unfortunately – especially because I really enjoyed BCD for their soondubu (soft tofu stew) – BCD has since closed its location in Koreatown, so I had to scramble and find another place… which I did, with Chris’s help… but then that place turned out [...]

Petrossian

Petrossian

I was recently invited to an event showcasing the newest goodies from Petrossian’s bakery. Petrossian is known for its caviar, posh digs, and amazing foie gras, but I’d no idea the cafe next door was just as amazing. (Though I once was the super lucky friend of someone who received a lavish gift basket from Petrossian, post-triple-bypass surgery… and that someone, being a very unadventurous diner and not knowing what half the stuff in there was, let me take everything I felt like. Hello fancy fleur de sel caramel and miel de grece (Greek honey)!) Coconut macaroons, which, if you [...]
