I get invitations for all sorts of fun things frequently. It’s part of the benefit of not only maintaining my own blog and having an audience that reads what I write, but also, living in a large city like NYC (okay, the largest in the country, but I’ll stop bragging now). Sometimes I just can’t attend all the events, or they just don’t pertain to the blog in a way that I could feel comfortable attending an event simply for swag… so I decline out of respect for other people who might want to go. Well, I was recently invited [...]

As I’ve mentioned, I love theme nights… and this time it was beer & pizza (minus beer)! That night, Hungry, Sarah and I headed over to check out Hell’s Kitchen newcomer Capizzi. We ordered two pizzas to share – our server (who I think was also the owner) came over and served us, so I only got a photo of the whole pie for the above “loaded” specialty pie: provolone, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, roasted peppers, garlic & fresh oregano. Our other pie, prosciutto&arugula, with requisite upskirt: was very flavorful, with a nice char, though it was a little softer [...]

Before it closed, I gathered a group of friends to go see Chinglish. If you don’t know what that is, it’s okay – it was a Broadway play written by David Henry Hwang that closed at the end of January. (I briefly mentioned going to see one of his other plays, Yellowface, here.) Of course, you can’t go to the theater on an empty stomach, so I picked Toloache for its proximity to the theater – plus I’d heard good things. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, there was some sort of mix up that wasn’t explained to me, as the [...]

You know what an awesome friend is? An awesome friend is one who, when you casually mention that you really want to go see Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, remembers this as your birthday approaches and gets tickets for you, even though she wants nothing more than to pretend the show doesn’t exist, and has absolutely no desire to go see it whatsoever. Oh – hi, that awesome friend is me… yes, for DLS‘s birthday, I got tickets to see Spiderman. And it was every bit as bad as I thought it might be – maybe even worse. Friends, it [...]

It is hard to believe that I have been living in the city for almost seven years now. While I did grow up close by in New Jersey, I was not well versed in city life. Luckily, my favorite Aunt offered to let me stay in her second bedroom until I got the hang of things. One of the things she taught me was food shopping in the city. D’Agostinos and Gristedes = BAD! Fresh Direct and local markets = GOOD! Note, this was before Trader Joe’s came to Manhattan, which I have become quite fond of. She let me [...]
