Dominique Ansel Bakery

Dominique Ansel Bakery

I’ve posted quite a bit about Dominique Ansel Bakery, but here’s another one… Chouettes, which were airy puffs with sugar crystals on the outside. Light and tasty but I won’t order these again – not to my fancy. Fresh chocolate chip cookies that tantalized us with the scent, so we had to grab one and my oh my, these were fantastic. Soooo good, warm, and slightly cakey in the center with a chewy edge… mmm. It appears that stopping by Dominique Ansel pre-road trip is becoming a tradition… yes, this was the day before I headed to DC (posts to [...]

La Carafe

La Carafe

Sometimes, I meet people that I think are awesome and make an effort to befriend them. (As StB says, there are three types of friends in life: the kind you wanted to make, the kind who wanted to be friends with you, and the kind that just happen.) I met Felicia a while ago, and always liked her, but the way life happens, time got away from me before I reached out and said, “Hey, let’s hang out.” I’m glad I did though – she likes eating as much as I do, and even enjoys theater – one of my [...]

5 Burro

5 Burro

I’ve written about 5 Burro a number of times in the past – but thought I’d dash off another post because I tried something new this time. I met up with Snorlax and FeistyMom one random Saturday afternoon for lunch, and we were seated quickly by the windows. Snorlax was raving about the mussels, so we decided to get that to start… Really observant readers may have noticed that I don’t eat mussels with any regularity. I’m just not a huge fan – and I’ve tried them at many places, but the drying, mealy crumbly texture always puts me off. [...]

Viet Royale – Falls Church, VA

Viet Royale – Falls Church, VA

During my trip to DC, I noticed on the Metro map that there was a stop called “Falls Church”. I don’t know much about the DC metro area, but I did know that Falls Church was home to a large Vietnamese population and boasted some really delicious pho and banh mi as I’ve heard… so I got really excited and suggested we drive there before visiting the National Air & Space Museum and then leaving for NYC. It all worked out in terms of proximity… I always start with an order of summer rolls, because I like these better than [...]

Gyu Kaku

Gyu Kaku

Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking, so it was one Friday night that DLS and I found ourselves at a local Japanese BBQ place, the recently opened third NYC location of Gyu Kaku. Per usual, DLS wanted Pellegrino. I opted for a strawberry lemonade, but when I’d reached the halfway mark, I added Pellegrino for a bit of sparkle. I love sparkling drinks, that’s just me. After a lot of debate – not knowing what to get, and just wanting a large sampler of everything, we finally settled on one of the set menus for two – the Hanabi [...]
