Things I Learned From My Meat Hiatus

What, you thought I would really just let it end like that?! I learned a lot about vegetarianism/pescetarianism and about myself during this 41 day/almost 6 week challenge.  I mean, really, a LOT. Vegetarian diets are very gassy. It isn’t impossible to eat out (as a vegetarian), but it is a big hassle unless you’re OK being “that girl” who has to ask a million and two questions about every dish that you maybe could eat… this will make you appreciate being a non-allergic/non-restricted person if you go back to eating meat.  Also, even though it isn’t impossible to eat [...]

Meatless Week 6 Recap!

The final stretch, home plate is in sight and I’m closing in, head first dive at the plate… haha.  (You can take that two ways!) It’s over. The Meat Hiatus (credit to Blondie of Blondie & Brownie for the name) is over, finally, finally over. 41 days of not eating meat, the first 20 eating fish and the last 21 of those flat out not eating any animal flesh. I did it. A self-proclaimed meat-a-holic, who couldn’t eat meals out without having meat in them (“Why should I pay for a meal that contains no meat?!”), who wasn’t full after [...]

Meatless Week 5 Recap!

We’re coming down the stretch.  I’ll be honest.  Again, I’m writing this on Friday since my week technically ends today (it starts on Saturday), and this weekend is going to be incredibly hard.  My darling friend HB actually said to me “Well you thought it was 5 weeks anyway so why not just end it?” and I really want to agree with her.  You see, there are two things in this world that I am very passionate about (well, some other things, too, but we’re sticking to these two for the blog, k?) and that’s food… and baseball.  I’ll be [...]

NOT a Recipe Friday: Bibimbap, kind of

I don’t feel like writing a new recipe.  Plus I didn’t actually make anything new this past weekend, so you’re just getting this randomness that I slapped together.  It’s awesome and delicious so I don’t want to hear any complaints (the only acceptable one is “I can’t get those things where I live” in which case I direct you to this awesome post on how to make them!) So a few weeks ago, I read this post over at Ambitious Deliciousness.  I’ve mentioned a few times that I don’t know much about Korean food in general but that what I do [...]

Veselka

SpB occasionally likes to call out themed food nights.  A few Fridays ago was burgers & fries (we’ve done pies & fries before, actually, though I can’t find the post… I KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?  I blame the lack of red meat… haha), but because my friends are just cruel enough to invite me to a burgers & fries night but not cruel enough to make it at a place that only serves (meat)burgers… we wound up at Veselka, a pretty famous Ukrainian joint in the East Village, which offers up quite a large selection of food, and, [...]
