Alfanoose

I recently met up with a long lost friend for lunch, who chose Alfanoose as our dining destination.  Long ago, I read about Alfanoose and how delicious it was, so I was keen on giving it a try.

My friend’s chicken something platter with hummus and a bulghur side with tomato.  While this was generally enjoyed, I believe the chicken was dry, but the sauce and hummus surely took care of that.

I really wanted to try the falafel sandwich, because that’s what I’d heard Alfanoose was known for.  But I also wanted to try kofta, because as I’ve mentioned a [...]

"Stalking" Downtown Lunch: Sam’s Falafel

Further stalking of Downtown Lunch found me at Sam’s Falafel on Friday, despite the momentary torrential downpour.  To be honest, I’d read about Sam’s Falafel a short while earlier in Time Out NY, and had wanted to try Sam’s.  With Downtown Lunch’s positive review being the final push, I made my way over to Sam’s this past Friday.
I guess the mini-downpour scared away the crowds Daniel encountered on his trip, since there was no one when I walked up and as I walked away to snap the above photo, only one person appeared.  This was at 1:15 pm.

For $5, [...]

City Shuffle: Cola’s

One muggy Friday afternoon – the Friday afternoon, actually, where Delgado hit a grand slam right before my very eyes, and in total, scored 9 RBIs – COUNT THEM THAT IS 9 RBIs!!! – while my boyfriend and I sat on the field at Yankees Stadium for the very last [regular season] Subway Series game ever to be played at the current Yankees Stadium – sorry I know this is a food blog but it was a simply amazing game!!! – anyway, after the game, we headed down to Chelsea to take care of some business, but found ourselves hungry [...]

Mamoun’s Falafel (East Side)

During a recent grocery-shopping-excursion, Cookie and I faced the ever-daunting task of what to feed one vegetarian and one carnivore from the same restaurant.  Thankfully, I lovelovelove falafel and rarely have the opportunity to eat it, and we both love hummus, so off to Mamoun’s (East Side) on St. Mark’s Place we went.
What struck me first about the small, unassuming place that I pass by whenever I hang out with my friends (I’m constantly in the St. Mark’s Place area), were the extremely low prices.  I mean, $2.50 for a falafel, and $5 for the platter.  $2 for the stuffed [...]

the little owl

BB’s pick for FC last month was the little owl.  Unfortunately, we hadn’t realized how small the place was or how hard it is to get reservations, so we snagged reservations for this month instead… at 5:15 pm.  This presented a problem as most of us get out of work much later than that… and I was stuck by a last minute mini-project so I arrived uncharacteristically 35 minutes late (I’m usually only 10 or 15 minutes late!).  In any case, the waitress, I was told, was extremely hospitable towards my friends while they waited.  Many trendy places will not [...]
