Uncle George’s Greek Tavern

Uncle George’s Greek Tavern

After Canz, TC really wanted to go to this street meat cart.  The games had been called on account of rain, none of us had umbrellas, but we gamely trekked around Astoria and discovered they’d gone home.  So instead we wandered over to Uncle George’s, where both TC and Gary had been before (separately), and got our Greek food on.  As soon as I saw taramosalata (cod roe spread/dip) on the menu, I had to get it.  I seek this out everywhere I go, and luckily, the boys obliged and helped me eat it.  This was definitely not the jarred [...]

Stamatis

Late in August, I found myself meeting up with the nephew and his dad (my brother) for the nephew’s final night in New York for the summer, so we let him choose the place. By the time we were ready to meet up, it was after 9pm, so we chose a comfort-food Greek place near the last stop on the N train. Stamatis has been around forever, it seems. There’s the brightly-lit main room, another room farther back with a mural painted on one wall, and a spacious, albeit dim outside area. We chose to sit outside this warm evening, [...]

Corfu Grill

Corfu Grill

Before I left for Peru, I was hungry and didn’t want to (really, couldn’t, with the empty fridge) cook, so I headed over to Corfu Grill to nom on some goodies.  First up: the taramasalata, or cod roe dip, which is sufficient though still not the best I’ve ever had (in all fairness, the best I ever had was in Greece).  Nice chew wedges of pita to dip in it; I’m a fan.  With my main course came grilled/toasted pita and yummy tzatziki sauce, a ginormous, tasty salad.  Yum!My main course: lamb kebabs, which came with the above plus potato [...]

I routinely receive emails requesting that I come to such and such restaurant for a tasting, but I usually do not accept… because a lot of times they are irrelevant to this blog (really far from the beaten path/hard to get to; too expensive for me to recommend even if it is amazing; or just plain looking for me to rave about their place without really believing in their product – yes, this happens, after I respond that if I go, I reserve the right to not post if I don’t want to, and if I do post, I will [...]

A Walk down Austin Street in Forest Hills

Let’s take a walk, shall we? On any given Sunday, I take a walk up to Austin St. in Forest Hills for a few reasons.  Partially to get some exercise and fresh air, partially to check out what’s new in the area, and partially just for the heck of it.  It’s a nice brisk walk and there’s always something to buy!  First stop is always Sakura-ya, especially if I haven’t eaten lunch yet.  I like to wander around inside and browse the Japanese market for all sorts of goodies, most great for bento.  They have a small section of bento [...]
