Before it closed, I gathered a group of friends to go see Chinglish. If you don’t know what that is, it’s okay – it was a Broadway play written by David Henry Hwang that closed at the end of January. (I briefly mentioned going to see one of his other plays, Yellowface, here.) Of course, you can’t go to the theater on an empty stomach, so I picked Toloache for its proximity to the theater – plus I’d heard good things. Unfortunately, despite having a reservation, there was some sort of mix up that wasn’t explained to me, as the [...]

Something amazing happened a short while ago. I discovered myself eating and enjoying spicy food… progressively more and more! Now, I don’t eat anything crazy, and I’m all about flavor over heat – and honestly, if something is served to me that isn’t spicy, I don’t really see a need to go out of my way to add heat… BUT if something is served spicy, I’ve been enjoying those dishes. What’s this got to do with anything? Well, my friend EL and I drove out to check out Pepperheads way out in LI, and picked up a couple of things. [...]

After a long weekend celebrating and eating at James Beard and Red Egg, we decided to postpone CT’s birthday dinner with my family until the next weekend in order to recover. Since my parents prefer staying in my neighborhood when they come in for dinner, mostly due to the plethora of free parking, we decided to appease them this time and stay local. Fortunately, we found a restaurant a couple months back that we were looking for an excuse to return, El Parador Cafe. After being seated, we were presented with some fresh chips and their non-vegetarian warm “salsa.” I [...]

What do people in NYC do on Sunday mornings? They have brunch, of course. DLS and I headed to one of my neighborhood staples, 5 Burro Cafe, one December Sunday morning, because I’d been curious about the brunch there for quite a while. DLS ordered the Western omelet, which he liked. (And yes, I teased him for ordering what I thought was the least Mexican dish on the menu.) I’ve enjoyed huevos rancheros at many places in the past, so I saw no reason not to get these here. Well, the rancheros sauce here – the red underneath my eggs [...]

Once again, CT & I were called on by my dear Aunt B to puppysit Scout while she was away. We value our time with Scout a lot, so it was no trouble to take care of her. Although we would never think of accepting payment for our services in the form of legal tender, Aunt B insists on treating us to a nice meal. Who are we to argue? You may remember last time she took us to an amazing meal at Ai Fiori. This time around we insisted on going to a more reasonably priced restaurant considering we [...]
