When I first moved back to Forest Hills two years ago, I did my share of research on food options near me, and asked everyone around me if they had suggestions. 5 Burro Cafe made frequent appearances on various forums, but also many people absolutely RAVED about this place.Unfortunately, every time I tried to go inside, it was super packed and busy. BF and I tried to go a good number of times but the wait generally extended over 30 minutes and beyond, at which point we’d both glance at each other, turn around, walk out and head down the street [...]

Terrible photos, but fish tacos! E-dee-licious, my yoga buddy, mentioned one night that she was going to make fish tacos. Sounded so yummy and when she told me the method, they were SO easy, I had to make them right away! I used flour tortillas because I don’t like corn tortillas, but you can use whichever you prefer. E-dee-licious said she uses tilapia, but I used dover sole cuz it’s cheap and easy to find everywhere. (I guess tilapia fits those qualifications as well, but when I went to the store, I found dover sole for like $3.99/lb.) It’s [...]

One of my favorite cousins made some time to hang out with me while I was in San Francisco for the Foodbuzz Food Bloggers Fest. I know how busy he is – especially because at the time, his wife was eight and a half months pregnant with their first child (!!!) – congratulations again, I can’t wait to meet him!!! – so I really appreciated that they both came out to eat and catch up with me. They chose nopalito, which, to my understanding, is kind of new-ish, and is forward-thinking-Mexican, sourcing the best and local/organic ingredients. Sounds interesting, [...]
Recipe Fridays (sort of): Chicken Tacos & Elotes
Red onion; hand-crumbled cotija cheese mixed with cayenne pepper powder; chopped up cilantro The whole spread – flour tortillas, quickly warmed in a dry skillet; giant “choles” I think, mixed with onion, lemon, cilantro, etc. as a relish; bowl of chicken cut up; mayo – please ignore my messy table with my random other items, haha A couple of boneless/skinless chicken thighs that I quickly cooked in a pan with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, then sliced up. On the left, you can sort of see it – boiled fresh corn on the cob, slicked with a little bit [...]

Food adventures. You know I love to have them.
But you know I hate hype even more than I love adventure.
A year or two (or more?) ago, the food world buzzed with the news of vendors that attended to the Red Hook ballfields.
They talked about the authenticity, the low prices, and the wonderful food.
Dominican, Salvadorean, Mexican, Colombian, and more.
Everyone & their mamas flocked out to Red Hook.
The New York Times wrote an article.
The hype increased to fever pitch.
Then, incredibly, some governing agency (DoH or DoP, I’m not sure) stepped in and decided [...]
