The day after Christmas found DLS on a day trip to Gettysburg. After getting our fill of battlefields and history, we jumped back on the road to head home. Yes, I’d made him go to Cracker Barrel – his first time! – on our way there, though I didn’t take photos. On our way back, we just had to stop at Waffle House… because that’s how I roll Someone asked me last time about the tomatoes – so here’s a shot of the relevant portion of the menu. DLS went with pork chops smothered in country gravy, Texas toast, and [...]

What do I like to do when I have to burn vacation time? Why, rent a car, drive well over a thousand miles, visit some friends, and take in some brewpubs in areas remote and urban, of course! One of the several Pennsylvania brewpubs I sought out (that you, Mr. Lander, for the recommendations!) is located in Bellefonte, a sleepy Victorian town just off the Interstate and near State College, home to the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Gamble Mill dates from the 18th century. Though, like most wooden structures of a certain age, much has been rebuilt due to [...]

Faithful readers of The Feisty Foodie may recall last year’s Cheesesteak Chowdown, where I earned my stripes as both a cheesesteak expert and a total glutton – within a 6 hour period, I consumed 6 half-cheesesteaks (which comes to about 3 cheesesteaks, but given my size, it’s quite a feat; also, I like to differentiate that I didn’t eat 3 cheesesteaks, I ate 6 halves from 6 different places). Of course, while Beer Boor and I undertook that task, on our return to NYC, we noted that there were places we wished we’d gone and other sandwiches we wished we’d [...]

Some towns are simply beer-drinking towns. There may not be much else to the place, but there’s almost no way to avoid finding a good beer in most every corner pub or divey-looking bar. I kinda feel that way about Philadelphia. Sure, the cheesesteaks and roast pork are phenomenal, but I just feel… dirty in most of the city. But I keep going back, to join friends in afternoons and evenings of eating and imbibing at our favorite establishments. Earth Bread + Brewery, located in Mount Airy, surely stands above all others with my drinking friends and I from New [...]

I drive back to Ma’s house for major holidays, a boring (for the most part) four-hour drive on major highways to get upstate. Lately I drive at night to get an extra full day with family. The halfway point of the trip is Scranton, where Interstate 380 meets I-81, and marks about the point where traffic drops off precipitously. So it’s a good place to stop for a soda or, if I’m in the mood, a quick bite. Only, what is there in that area besides the standard fast food? You are looking at what I was told is the [...]
