Au Pied de Cochon
When it was first decided that DLS and I were going to Montreal, there was only one place I wanted to visit. I first heard of this place in 2008 through this blog post – and it stuck in my head since then. I don’t even know what, exactly, in that post made me want to eat here desperately, but whenever Montreal has been suggested to me, I’ve thought of Au Pied de Cochon. DLS made reservations for our last evening in Montreal, and though I felt a little sick after overindulging (bagels, poutine, deli sandwiches, and then snacks in [...]

Though I wasn’t particularly hungry after our poutine at Patati Patata, we were a few short blocks from Schwartz’s, and I’d received explicit instructions to stop there for a sandwich. Well, it would have been a few short blocks if it wasn’t -17 degrees out, but as it was, it felt like walking 5 miles with the cold pressing down on us… Ahem. Because there was a wait, and neither of us really wanted to wait or sit down and eat, I ordered a sandwich to go and took it back to our hotel room to eat. It looks kind [...]

A short while after eating Fairmount Bagels, we headed over to Patati Patata for – you guessed it – poutine. By this time, DLS had discovered that he preferred poutine in its classic form – that it was perfect as is, and additions tended to cloud its taste or were simply unnecessary. So he chose to get the plain here – wondered why an olive was on top – and proceeded to devour it. I know he enjoyed this one, though I believe he liked La Banquise slightly better. Crisp frites, savory gravy, and lots of cheese curds. Yum! Since [...]

You must have realized by now that I haven’t been taking photos of the exteriors of places. Why? Well, because in Montreal, it was -17 degrees (yes, I am going to find a way to work that nugget into every single Montreal post), and damned if I was going to stop outside a place to fumble to take out my camera then take a photo while I slowly froze solid! In any case, the next morning, our first stop was Fairmount Bagels, like good New Yorkers. Wait, what? Bagels outside of NYC – and trust me, I’ve tried – just [...]

As I mentioned, my friend’s husband grew up in Montreal… but he’s also Vietnamese, so when he mentioned his favorite pho place, I knew we had to go – especially given how much I love pho. Plates of fresh chiles were on each table. No, I didn’t eat any of these. (Even though – exciting news! I have been eating spicy food lately and enjoying it. Flavor and heat without burning my face off!) The usual sauce station, though note that there’s a small bottle of fish sauce as well! The summer rolls are ordered by the piece, which I [...]
