As I mentioned in my post about Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown, DLS had remarked that he’d liked the soup dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai in Flushing. For completeness’ sake, I decided to visit the one in Flushing and compare myself. Unfortunately, due to schedules being what they are, I had to visit alone – and therefore only ordered the soup dumplings.
At least they look okay, unlike the ones at Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown.
Unfortunately, though these were marginally better than Joe’s Shanghai in Chinatown, they still weren’t all that good. Gummy, thick, and not quite as flavorful soup as one expects or wants from a soup dumpling, this was a resounding pass.
To add insult to injury, they charged me a 15% service charge. For what? It’s not like service was good – borderline bad, actually – and I’m the type that tips anyway. Grrrrrrr. I will NOT be returning.
Yvo says: Perhaps there are other dishes here that make Joe’s Shanghai in Flushing a worthy visit, but I will not be returning to search for them. The poor soup dumplings and the 15% service charge for beh service add up to me not wanting to revisit the experience. StB told me that supposedly there’s one “bad” chef in the Joe’s Shanghai empire that gets rotated through the restaurants, but apparently I’ve only visited when he’s at whatever Joe’s I’m visiting… I’ll stop playing that roulette, thanks, since I keep losing.

Mandatory tips speaks multiple water/tea runs for the waiter. Lots of tea please to wash down the meh dumplings.
Or ultimately demand they remove the service charge. They cannot force you to pay it. Only make you feel bad for not doing so…boohoo I won’t be returning, now give me back MY money! 😛

Haha, I would never do that though. I just sulk silently and then write about it later. Minus one Yelp star.

Mandatory service charge for one person? The IRS should audit them.

That would be their worst nightmare…

The food is edible. The Service is horrible. The plates and silverware were greasy at first sight. This is not the place to bring my date!
