After 456 Shanghai, StB headed home, while DLS and I began our normal post-dinner walk back to Hell’s Kitchen. It’s not torture – it’s the only way I can eat the way I do and not gain weight rapidly. (This way, it’s a slow build-up!) In any case, I also wanted to walk to Churreria, the newly opened churro place. Yes, they focus on churros, and though I’ve only mentioned it here and there, I really like churros. Quite a few times I’ve attempted to have churros and hot chocolate at various restaurants around NYC, but every time I order them, they say they’re out. BOOOOOOOO. A place dedicated to that can’t be out, right? RIGHT.
(Funny note: I tried to order churros con chocolat at Cafe Espanol, and they didn’t have. When I received the press release announcing Churerria’s opening within a few days of this, it was FATE.)
The first thing I ordered was horchata, though, because I ADORE HORCHATA. I really need to learn how to make my own – I excitedly asked the server if they made their own in-house. She admitted that no, it’s store-bought, but she showed me the container – which I realized I’ve seen in stores in the past but didn’t know it was horchata because the word is on the bottle in small letters! – so I can go buy some on my own now. Unfortunately, this was easily my least favorite version of horchata to date – something about the seasonings used didn’t do it for me. Suitable to drink, but I’d probably try a different brand and I won’t be ordering this from there again…
For $5, I ordered a paper cone of churros…
which came still hot, ever so slightly sweet, perfectly crisp and just… heavenly…
along with a cup of thick dark chocolate to dip the churros in. DLS and I had a grand time, dipping the churros in and just enjoying how the thick, dark chocolate – which wasn’t very sweet at all (a good thing, since both of us like dark chocolate, not too much sugar to our chocolate) – coated each piece. So good.
I finally had the churros con chocolat that I’d been dreaming about.
Yvo says: Even if this wasn’t the only churreria I knew existed in NYC, I would go here – the churros were the perfect balance of crisp, light sweetness, and chewy… while the chocolate was the perfect accompaniment. I know I’ll be back (and have already walked by another few times, though I’ve been super full just as I walked by and couldn’t justify going in again…) for post-meal dessert!

$5 for some churros? I’ll stick to the guys in Grand Central for $1. Note: I have never bought any churros from them, haha.
So are churros the first food trend of 2012?
Feisty Foodie says
These are freshly fried, silly man.
TT says
meh, so what do you think they earn a $4.95 profit on every order? To be the eternal pessimist, I doubt this place is still in business by the end of the year.
Feisty Foodie says
Eternal Darkness of the Pessimist’s Mind?
I’ll take that bet, since they’re owned by Socarrat next door and if the owners want to float this place, they will.

Is this all they serve? Surely not.
Feisty Foodie says
No, they have other items, but this is their namesake item and the reason I’d go there. They also have small sandwiches.

Man, I want freshly fried churros over hot chocolate. Those look good. It better be well worth the $5!
Feisty Foodie says
I think they are! Instead of having to hunt them down in subways 😛

There’s a video on Chow on how to make your own horchata.
Looks really simple.

Thanks Tracie – I’ve looked up how to make it before, I just haven’t had the inclination since it’s kind of a fun treat whenever I see it on menus 😉

Does the $5 include the cup of chocolate? B/c when I was in NZ, there was a place that made fresh churros but it was $9 for 3. Add $1 for sugar or cinnamon sugar toppings. And another $2 for the cup of chocolate of dulce de leche. I scoffed at how expensive that was.
Feisty Foodie says
My final bill was $7 including the horchata, so I am going to say yes, it included the chocolate. However, I just tried to look up their menu to confirm it, and MenuPages may have a more updated pricing structure where you get to pick how many churros you get, so my price is outdated.

5 backs for churros??!! Flour, water, salt…Cheap ingredients, great return on investment. I should start a churros bussiness in the city:) In Spain we usually eat churros in New Year’s eve after a long night of partying and debauchery.
