Ristorante Aglio

I was recently invited to attend a press dinner at Restaurant Aglio, and as my current eating partner, I tagged DLS to join me. We were greeted with our choice of aperitifs: the Sylvia on the left for me (Belvedere, Ginger Skyy, St. Germain, mint, cucumber, ginger, ginger ale and agave) and the Basilico Fizz on the right for him (garlic infused vodka, dry vermouth, basil, olive juice), each $13. Reading those descriptions, longtime readers will already know I liked my appropriately chosen Sylvia, as it contains ingredients that I really enjoy in cocktails – refreshing, light, and delicious. Unfortunately, [...]

Socarrat Paella Bar

Socarrat Paella Bar

After our snack at Dominique Ansel, DLS and I met up with StB and C2 at Socarrat Paella Bar for dinner. We started off with bacalao (salted codfish) croquettes.  I thought these were alright, I wanted the aioli on the bottom to have a bit more oomph or even the croquette itself to have more punch to them.  They were good – but just not a standout.  After reading Hungry’s post the week before about her experience at Soccarat, I wanted one thing: fried artichokes!  Though I wished the portion were larger, it was just as tasty as I wanted [...]

Tuesdays with TT: Westway Diner

Tuesdays with TT: Westway Diner

It is hard to believe that I have been living in the city for almost seven years now. While I did grow up close by in New Jersey, I was not well versed in city life. Luckily, my favorite Aunt offered to let me stay in her second bedroom until I got the hang of things. One of the things she taught me was food shopping in the city. D’Agostinos and Gristedes = BAD! Fresh Direct and local markets = GOOD! Note, this was before Trader Joe’s came to Manhattan, which I have become quite fond of. She let me [...]

Dominique Ansel Bakery

Dominique Ansel Bakery

After a long day touring the Financial District (Bodies, WTC Memorial, Irish Hunger Memorial, Battery Park, and all sorts of fun things – I give a great informational/historical tour of the Downtown area!), DLS and I walked up through Nolita to meet StB and C2 for dinner.  Along the way, though, I suddenly noticed a sign and thought – holy we’re outside Dominique Ansel! so I insisted we go in and have a small bite.  Because Dominique Ansel was the executive pastry chef when I went to Daniel and I dream about those madeleines… I dream about them.  DLS looked [...]

Samplrs

Samplrs

I was recently introduced to Samplrs, which is a bit like Foodzie with one major difference: while Foodzie focuses on small artisan vendors from all over the country – some in places that I’ll likely never visit – Samplrs focuses on small artisan vendors from my very favorite place on earth: New York City. Obviously, both ways have their pros and cons, but I love-love-LOVE this. I have made plenty of friends over the years who simply have no intention or ability to ever visit New York themselves, but they read about what I’m eating here and they just want [...]
