5 Burro Cafe (Brunch)

What do people in NYC do on Sunday mornings? They have brunch, of course. DLS and I headed to one of my neighborhood staples, 5 Burro Cafe, one December Sunday morning, because I’d been curious about the brunch there for quite a while.
DLS ordered the Western omelet, which he liked. (And yes, I teased him for ordering what I thought was the least Mexican dish on the menu.)

I’ve enjoyed huevos rancheros at many places in the past, so I saw no reason not to get these here. Well, the rancheros sauce here – the red underneath my eggs – was way spicier than I’ve had in the past, no joke. It wasn’t unbearable, but I found myself eating as little of the sauce as possible, or mixing it with things to temper the heat. So really, what I had was a platter of two fried eggs, guacamole, pico de gallo, beans, and rice (I really like those side bits, the way they’re made at 5 Burro is really tasty!)… but for $12~ not bad. True that just a few doors down, Bonfire Grill offers brunch with two alcoholic beverages for just a few bucks more, but eh. It all depends what you’re look for in a brunch menu…
Yvo says: If you’re looking for a Mexican slant to your brunch, then 5 Burro does the trick. For $3 you can add on a margarita, too, so if you’re into that, this is totally your joint. I’ll still be back for more Mexican food, always, and it’ll go into the brunch rotation, though I don’t think it’ll be the general aim for me when I want brunch in my neighborhood (I really like eggs benedict).
definitely recommended for lunch/dinner; brunch depends on what you feel like eating

I still remembered the brunch was only $10…like two years ago
I like the complimentary chips and salsa to fortify a lazy Sunday noon. Have you been to Austin House, the diner across the street? It’s a no-frill mom and pop restaurant, which I love. Not the best of food, but it’s a FH institution, especially after UJ closed…:( Can’t believe that was replaced by Moca. Eek…
No, I haven’t… What’s UJ?
UJ’s was the little luncheonette that occupied the space where Moca is now. Super cheap prices for excellent breakfast fare!
Ohhh, I remember that place. Only went once, and it was ages and ages ago.
After having Huevos Rancheros at Norma’s, in the Parker Merdien, I cannot eat it any place else. It’s like a standard that cannot be beat
I’ve only been to Norma’s once… the $7 orange juice with no alcohol ruined it for me (this was obviously years ago as I think the OJ is more now!)
It needs bacon. Tocino?
It’s been a while since I had a nice brunch. Might be time to change that.
I did think the lack of meat was a detractor in the price too – I think you should grab your friends and go to Highliner for brunch! Yum yum yum. Batting cages afterwards
Come on, Friend, let’s go knock around balls.
Ergh, I will sit on my lazy behind and eat hash.
What would you all recommend for a good drunk brunch? I’ve got a friend coming into town this weekend who wants to forget she’s a mom.
Any place with an unlimited drinks brunch is a good start – I like Essex though I haven’t been in a very long time. You CAN make reservations (which it doesn’t seem like a lot of people know), too! I think they officially say three drinks are included, but let’s just say that the servers tend to be generous and forget to count…

Were the eggs cooked properly with runny yolks and all?
Oh yes, actually – perfectly runny. I believe I ordered easy over for some reason (or that’s how they were listed on the menu?), but I had no complaints about my eggs.
