My sister, MSC, recently came up from Austin to visit and have a minor surgery performed. NYC does have the best doctors in the world afterall. She was going to stay with me the night before since the procedure was so early in the morning and it would have been a pain to come from my parent’s house in NJ. We decided a low-key, casual dinner was best in order to ease MSC’s nerves. I chose my go-to pizza delivery place, Patsy’s, since it is close by and has a nice dining room too. Ironically enough, in the six years [...]

I recently flew to San Francisco – one of my very favorite domestic cities - to attend the 2nd Annual Foodbuzz Fest (here’s last year’s write-up). Follow along for the next two weeks as I recap my weekend trip! The main event – dinner at the Ferry Building on Saturday evening – was predicated by a flurry of getting ready. At the last minute of me packing on Thursday evening for this weekend festival, I’d noticed that this event was listed as a “gala dinner” – now, I have limited experience attending galas, but I do know that in NYC, when [...]

I enjoy trying new restaurants and new cuisines, but in this city I’d rather not blindly pick a place and hope for the best. I’d much rather have some sort of guidance on the subject. James of The Eaten Path knows a bit about the former Soviet republics and their cuisine. Apparently attempting to try a restaurant from each, he took an assortment of bloggers to Ukus in Astoria a few months back, and this month found Pirosmani, a Georgian restaurant — rare in New York — to try earlier this month. It’s not close, however; Pirosmani is located in [...]

I recently flew to San Francisco – one of my very favorite domestic cities - to attend the 2nd Annual Foodbuzz Fest (here’s last year’s write-up). Follow along for the next two weeks as I recap my weekend trip! After the AM breakout sessions, I was dying to try the Alaskan seafood we’d seen demo’d but been unable to try. It smelled fabulous – well, the halibut did, I Tweet’d my unhappy nose with the smelly salmon – so after Blondie and I walked to the Metreon, we walked straight to the back where they’d set up an area to make [...]
How-To: Measure Dry Ingredients

All these months of writing about baking and presenting you with recipes has been lots of fun, but I realized when I wrote about my essential kitchen tools (and Connie the Commenter confirmed my thoughts) that I assume everyone knows how to do the basics, like measure ingredients and read recipes. But not everyone does. So I vow that every few weeks, I’ll do an instructional post. Today, I’m starting from scratch. I’ve told countless kitchen-wary people that if they can read, they can cook and bake. Most of the time, it works out pretty well. But not always. Here’s [...]
