My sister, MSC, was in town recently for her best friend’s wedding. She was not attending as a guest though, but as the Minister. MSC recently became ordained by one of those internet churches you hear about. Pretty funny if I say so myself. Since she was in town for a couple days, she and my parents came in for dinner. They decided they wanted us to stay in the neighborhood, so I decided that we should check out a relatively new Japanese place called Chado.
We started off with a couple appetizers for the table.
Edamame
“Shrimp & Crab Harumaki” spring rolls with baby leeks, woodear mushrooms, spicy kalamansi nectar dip. These were good with the shrimp being the most pronounced flavor.
Tempura Appetizer with Shrimp, Carrots, Eggplant, and Onion. These items were ok. The “stick thingy” is actually fried ramen noodles, not just a pretty garnish.
MSC got the “Spicy Aquatic Roll” spicy tuna with crunchy flakes, ao kappa top with torched salmon and kabayaki sauce. She was happy with her selection.
Mom is not the biggest sushi fan, so I was pretty surprised that she got it. She liked her Avocado Roll and Tuna Roll.
Aunt B ordered the California roll, Tuna roll, and Spicy shrimp roll. She was especially pleased with the Spicy shrimp roll mainly due to the panko-fried shrimp. I had a bite and it was quite tasty and had nicely contrasting textures.
CT ordered the Sashimi Platter. I thought it was pretty funny that the platter came with a big bowl of rice on the side. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of getting sashimi?
CT says: The fish was all pretty yummy and fresh. I was surprised to see a cooked fish included in the platter. Unfortunately I couldn’t remember what they told me it was, but it was delicious! I’m really mad at myself for not asking them again. I was also going to ask for a small bowl of rice on the side, but decided to forgo it, so I was also surprised to see the large bowl it came with. I have a hard time seeing rice and not eating it, so of course I dug in even though I was already full. Fortunately, TT took it away from me before I made myself ill.
Dad got the “Popular Mix And Match Sushi” with 3 pcs tuna, 3 pcs yellow tail, 3 pcs salmon and 1 eel cucumber roll. The nigiri was a bit on the smaller side, but the fish was super fresh. He was very pleased with his meal.
I ordered the “Sushi Deluxe.” Similar to what Dad got, the pieces were small but really tasty. I thought I would still be hungry after eating this, but I was pleasantly satisfied.
All in all, it was a very nice meal. I was glad MSC had time to come in and see us since she was back in town and I hadn’t seen her since we went down to Austin back in the spring. Chado is a bit on the pricier side, but the quality of the fish is so high that it is worth it.

Cool. Sushi looks fresh. Spring rolls lookin’ meaty!

In an area saturated with sushi restaurants, it was nice to find a place with good quality fish and nice decor! I always go to the same place, but this one was definitely “classier” than my regular spot.

Isn’t the point of sashimi is to have rice on the side?
TT says
Maybe?
I always thought the point was to have no rice, even on the side. I don’t remember ever getting rice when ordering sashimi.
Hungry says
Maybe it’s really traditional to have rice on the side. Americans, not so much.

That spicy Aquatic Roll looks tasty!

That looks pretty good, very fresh looking fish (bright colors). CT, I think the “cooked” fish you have there is white tuna tataki – it’s definitely tataki of some sort, just flame kissed. Wait, what’s in the top right corner – it sort of looks like ginger but then also doesn’t…?
Sashimi is usually served with rice on the side (from my experience). I don’t get full with raw fish – I can eat enormous amounts of seafood without feeling full (yes, scary much more than what I already eat), so the rice is there to remind me to carb up.
CT says
Oops! Forgot to mention that one… it was a fried white fish. Not very good though, it came out cold and without much flavor. I only tried one piece and left the rest. If I were to order it again, and specify to leave it out.
Thanks for the tip on the tataki! I’ll keep my eye out for it.
