As I’ve mentioned in the past, Midtown Lunch Happy Hours are kind of my thing 😉 – from the last three we’ve had, the food…
May was at Snafu, a lovely bar that is ‘bring your own food’ – so we did! Dried squid/cuttlefish…

The same amazing woman who made us all delicious stromboli also brought a huge tray of baked ziti, omgz yums.

M&M cookies
Our next happy hour ended with us trooping across the street to grab some grub from another pub. Someone’s calamari salad.
Someone’s ridiculous burger.
My ridiculous salad. Which was not good. That shell was super oily and not tasty, and the salad was just… weird.
Someone else’s burger.
The burgers looked good at least…
And the most recent one at Shorty’s. This was my Shorty cheesesteak, wit whiz (with onions and Cheez Whiz).
Broken open.
Compared to my hand for size reference. $6 – the size is not bad. But something was off. Am I too picky? The bread wasn’t very good for the cheesesteak, and overall, I felt it was pretty lacking. I don’t mean in size – I was fine paying $6 for this size, but after the Cheesesteak Chowdown, I just wanted a better cheesesteak than this. If it didn’t call itself a cheesesteak, I might forgive it some of its sins. But as it is, even as a simple steak and cheese sandwich, I was dissatisfied.
Oh well, these are just some of the things I’ve eaten at ML HHs… not really a review. Except for Shorty’s. I don’t like them. They also didn’t have AC. Ohhh, and it’s a Phillies bar (duh). 😛 Hahaha.
Yvo says: Snafu = win, love the lounge area upstairs and the BYO food; whatever that second place was (across from Snafu, some pub – someone help me out with the name?) = wack, and Shorty’s = pass!

I ordered the same cheese steak as you and I liked mine okay. I did think it was a little dry (maybe it needed more whiz and onions!) but I enjoyed it. Of course, I don’t have any real cheese steak benchmarks to gauge by other than Pat’s and Geno’s in Philly, so maybe Shorty’s really isn’t that good. No complaints about the bread either.
I do regret not taking TT’s advice to order the pork sandwich. I should have gotten both!
I think this might be the first time I’ve disagreed so completely with your opinion. Has the world stopped spinning on its axis?

I ordered the Whole at Shorty’s and it was only slighty bigger than a shorty. They gypped me at $9. Seriously, NOT WORTH IT! Stick to the shorty. I liked the sandwich fine, even the bread, but definitely didn’t think it was a Whole being a few inches bigger.
The first burger above is mine from Connolly’s. It’s the GODZILLA KOBE BURGER, topped with spicy slaw, chipotle jack cheese, and spicy scallion mayo. The other burger is the GAELIC BURGER, certified angus beef pub burger, cheddar cheese , Irish bacon, and caramelized onions. The menu calls them “Awesome Burgers” but I wasn’t impressed. The ingredients do sound awesome, but I ordered it medium and it call well-done! So it was too dry and burnt when I ate it. Me need juicy burger!!
Sigh. Too bad I missed out on stromboli *teardrop

Now you have presented me with the conundrum of what to make for dinner – cheesesteaks or stromboli.
Thanks. ;D
