I recently met up with Beer Boor to take care of some business downtown, and tried to go to Mara’s Homemade afterwards. Unfortunately, Mara’s is closed on Tuesdays, so we walked around a bit until landing at One and One. He claimed they had really good fried fish – something about which I am extremely picky – so I agreed to give it a shot.
Since it was still happy hour and appetizers were half off, I decided to get a bunch of appetizers and call it a day. The house special sauce wings were a touch too sweet on sauce – I don’t mind excess sauce, but the sauce here was just a bit too syrupy sweet, like BBQ sauce that’d gone rogue. The wings were meaty and tasty, however, so next time, perhaps a switch to plain buffalo instead of house special sauce.
Jalapeno poppers were tasty, slightly spicy, and filled with liquid cheese – the way they ought to be, nommm, so good! Perfect bar food, and they were playing the Mets game while I happily gobbled these down.
Beer Boor’s order of fried fish. Well, let’s just say I was not surprised when they fell short of expectations. He tried to cover by saying they weren’t as good as he remembered, but let’s face it: it was only alright.
HOWEVER, one of the appetizers was ‘fish bites’ or some such, basically smaller, bite-sized(ish) pieces of fish that was fried… and this was totally nommable! Crispy bits, fried properly, and a decent tartar sauce for dipping. I’d totally order this again! Chomp.
Last and kind of least were the popcorn shrimp with a ‘lime chile dipping sauce’ that tasted like duck sauce. The shrimp itself was fine; teeny tiny shrimp deep fried such that all you tasted was the satisfactory batter, crunchy, yeah it tastes fine, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t order this again. Meh.
Yvo says: Totally worth the happy hour special prices, the appetizers appear to be solid bar food, great to watch the game while munching. I would definitely go back – the beer selection appears to be halfway decent, though I stuck to a simple diet soda, not wanting to imbibe that night. I’ll be back for a game or two in the near future… though I’ll always opt for the fried fish bites over the full platter!

Lotta gunk on those wings but sticky wings are welcome if solid.
Way to load up on the fried goods!
