Spot Dessert Bar (again)

I finally had the opportunity to return to Spot and try out the yuzu eskimo that everyone raves about.  Yes, it was good – tangy from the yuzu, and slightly tart raspberry foam.  Interesting.  But AB and I had decided to split desserts, so …

We also ordered the white miso semifreddo with an olive oil cake.  I really liked this, which is great, because the yuzu was placed in front of AB who liked the yuzu eskimo more than this.  The dense cake played well with the not-entirely-too-sweet white miso semifreddo… I was impressed with the playfulness of the dish and the flavors complementing each other so perfectly.  Win!

Well, here’s a cute story for you: one of the owners recognized me because after I’d posted my first review of Spot, I posted a link on Facebook (per usual) and tagged him.  He came over to introduce himself, to ask a few questions, and later sent our table a few dishes of ice cream to try.  Unfortunately, the above was coconut, and I couldn’t try it, but judging by my friends’ reactions and how much they ate of it, it was pretty good.

The other dish, however, was really interesting – he said it was an experimental/new flavor – beer ice cream.  From my super limited knowledge of beer – hey, that’s why I have a beer blogger now! – I will say that I guessed it was a raspberry lambic (and my friends in attendance that night who actually drink that type of beer agreed; feel free to correct me though!).  Being that I don’t like beer and its beery-taste, the surprising part was just how much I enjoyed it.  Though it still clearly tasted like beer, it hadn’t that yucky taste to it that I don’t like about beer; instead, it just had a slight bitter edge to it from the beer, a lil fruitiness, and overwhelming just yum.  I don’t know that I could eat a whole scoop of it, which was AB’s comment – that initially, it was really good, but after a few more bites, she quickly got tired of the flavor – but it was interesting and definitely something I’d like to see a small scoop of in conjunction with one of their other constructed desserts (a la yuzu eskimo or white miso semifreddo).  NOM!

Yvo says: I’ve been back here several times since the first time; due in part because of the location, the moderate dessert prices (though drinks remain on the high side!), and because I just like the atmosphere.  The desserts can be very hit or miss – I still am not fond of the cupcakes, and that cookie was awful, but the dessert tapas portion of the menu thusfar has not failed to deliver on yumminess, so I strongly advise sticking to that portion of the menu while they rework the other items (something the owner assured me was an ongoing process to improve their menu).  Though the wait can be a bit annoying at times – it isn’t a large place – keeping in mind the location, the atmosphere, and the prices, well, it is to be expected that later in the night on weekends, you will need to wait.  Ah well.

Ooohh, beer ice cream? That sounds interesting.

I wish the lighting was better at Spot. Oh well.

I am not a beer fan, either, but raspberry Lambic is like the most amazing scrumptious beer soda EVER.
