Captain Lawrence Rosso e Marrone

Captain Lawrence Rosso e Marrone

Some people have a sweet tooth. I have a sour tooth. In most beer styles, taking a sip and finding it sour would result in pouring the remainder of the beer down the sink. But when it’s intentional, as with Captain Lawrence’s Rosso e Marrone (“Red and Brown”), that sourness, and the funkiness of the byproducts of the yeast — in this beer, it’s a strain named Brettanomyces — just creates a beer like no other. Captain Lawrence Brewing Company, and its owner/brewer, Scott Vaccaro, have been churning out just great beer after great beer from their location in Pleasantville [...]

Beer Boor Recipe Fridays: Super Sunday Supper

Beer Boor Recipe Fridays: Super Sunday Supper

In the spirit of Feisty Foodie, I cooked up a Super Sunday Supper of sorts for Easter, with a brisket on-hand of nearly five pounds. My smoker, a stovetop cast-iron behemoth from Emeril, can’t handle a slab of meat that size. What to do, what to do… oh, let’s smoke half and braise half! First off, I dry-rubbed both halves of the brisket in a combination of kosher salt, fresh-ground pepper, white pepper, paprika, and a few dashes of cayenne pepper. I don’t measure these as much as I eyeball it, weighting it heavily toward the salt and fresh pepper. [...]

Spot Dessert Bar (again)

Spot Dessert Bar (again)

I finally had the opportunity to return to Spot and try out the yuzu eskimo that everyone raves about.  Yes, it was good – tangy from the yuzu, and slightly tart raspberry foam.  Interesting.  But AB and I had decided to split desserts, so … We also ordered the white miso semifreddo with an olive oil cake.  I really liked this, which is great, because the yuzu was placed in front of AB who liked the yuzu eskimo more than this.  The dense cake played well with the not-entirely-too-sweet white miso semifreddo… I was impressed with the playfulness of the [...]

Martha’s Country Bakery – Strawberry Shortcake

Martha’s Country Bakery – Strawberry Shortcake

Recently, talking about strawberry shortcake, Esther pointed me to Martha’s.  I’ve written about Martha’s a few times; while I don’t like their cupcakes all that much, my best friend loves them… my boyfriend likes their fruit tarts quite a bit and I love their cookies.  So when Esther told me that their strawberry shortcake is really good, I headed over and snagged a slice.  Doesn’t it look GOOD?Esther had mentioned the use of strawberry preserves, and I was eager for that.  Unfortunately, as I’d been given the very pretty end slice, there was way more whipped cream at one end [...]

Project 365: Day 116

A sad view as I stumbled home from ML HH – a solitary Mets hat, clean, almost brand new, chucked in, strange after we’d just won two games of a doubleheader… but there it was.  I felt sad for my team.  Ya gotta believe, friend – ya gotta believe! What is Project 365? Share and Enjoy:
