I went to Shake Shack twice this week and both times didn’t get a Shackburger. Gasp! I know! But the first time was right after lunch at Pipa for MK’s birthday (brief note: I didn’t photograph the meal, but our service, despite the place being next to completely empty – 2-3 other tables and that’s it – was HORRIBLE, slow, and no apologies or explanation why it took freakin’ an HOUR to bring our food! NOTHING, I will never go there again, it was not delicious enough for that sort of crap). The second time, I went there for a specific purpose and that purpose did not include burgers.
I think another trip is in order…
After MK’s birthday lunch, we wandered around, just chatting and hanging out – like those long ago days when agendas were nonexistent and people didn’t need to calendar time to see each other, you just called and said “Hey, what are you doing? Come outside,” and the other person would come out and you’d wander around just … carefree … *shakes head* sorry, I’ve been really reminiscent of the past lately. Anyway, afterwards, the B-line (no hot food!) was really manageable, so I got a Hopscotch, my first non-plain-vanilla-frozen-custard-on-a-cone order from Shake Shack. (I seem to always wind up there when the flavor of the day is not one I want to try.)
I ordered quickly and paid, but right after I paid, I said “I don’t think this is right…” and explained that she’d only charged me $6 (I also ordered a soda for the birthday girl). There’d been a miscommunication (I talk pretty softly sometimes, apparently) and she thought I said plain vanilla in a cup. So she changed my order but didn’t charge me the extra $3, which was really nice of her.
I really liked the textures and flavors of this – chocolate chunks, toffee bits and a caramel drizzle, though the mixing process wasn’t quite thorough and the bottom had way too much caramel/toffee, making it a bit of an oversweet mess at the end. Otherwise, solidly delicious, buttery, and super fatty, the way you want it to be when you’re being bad. (If you’re going to be bad, do it right.)
On Wednesday, I made a trip strictly to try the salted caramel frozen custard. I am kind of a nut… salted caramel is teh YUMZ, so when I caught sight of it on the frozen custard calendar, I was all, omg I have to go. I posted about it on both Facebook and Midtown Lunch’s forums, asking if anyone wanted to join me, and wound up scrounging up a few people – Talida of Talida Bakes, James of The Eaten Path, Steven P. (a Midtown Lunch commenter), and a coworker. Yay fun meeting new people 🙂
The line was thankfully short or at least manageable (no B-Line, though Talida and I both opted only for frozen custard, we waited with the rest of the crew), especially given that James arrived early to secure a spot for us (thanks, James!!!), and we soon had our melty frozen custard in our hands. Talida and I both were disappointed (as you can see here) – I thought it wasn’t quite salty enough, and she thought it wasn’t quite caramel-y enough, basically, overall, it was a bit on the bland side, needing some more flavor. Oh well.
I guess I’ll stick to the burgers…
PS I’m a huge fan of the vanilla frozen custard on a cone. HUGE. It’s delicious, creamy, cold, satisfying. I just never posted about it for some reason…
