Lunar New Year’s Eve Feast

January 26th marked the new lunar year.  Some people refer to this as “Chinese new year”, but really, so many cultures celebrate this that I feel it’s more fair and inclusive to refer to it as the lunar new year – the “other” new year, January 1st, marks the beginning of the solar year.  It’s all very interesting if you feel like reading up on it In any case, the tradition dictates that on the lunar new year’s eve, one must feast and feast and feast.  But not just any feast; one must feast upon certain dishes in order to [...]

Serial Thursdays: Childhood Memories

“Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” the little girl only stopped screaming long enough to take a quick breath before resuming her yelling.  “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO” at a louder volume this time, she didn’t blink, just stared straight into her father’s eyes, giving him the Death Stare she’d patented.  Her father, for his part, calmly watched her, not saying a word.  He waited until she appeared to have tired herself out before asking, “Are you done yet?” The girl, Karri, eyed him shrewdly.  She may have appeared to only be a 10 year old girl, but she was the Queen of Getting Her Way.  She’d met with some [...]

Max

I recently had the chance to share a meal with fellow food blogger Soopling of Salty Savory Sweet, an excellent food blog that breaks it down for you… in much less words than I could ever hope to.  She chose Max, a cozy Italian joint down in the LES/East Village (what’s with me & Italian places in the LES/East Village lately?!), neither of us realizing just how cozy and… romantic the place was.  Super dimly lit, we were joking about how our photos were coming out (and you’ll see how poorly mine came out) and how all I had to [...]

Super Bowl Snackin’ from Fairway Markets

January 27, 2009 by

Game Day is coming up!  If you’re like me, the Super Bowl is usually just another day… of PIGGING OUT!!!  Of course, with the holidays so recent in my memory… and y’know… all of this cooking and cooking and cooking and eating and eating… I kind of want things to be a little bit healthier.  But easy.  What’s a girl to do? I recently had the good fortune to be sent, courtesy of Fairway, a selection of healthy snacks – enough to host my own small Super Bowl party actually – although this year will be at HB’s.  Not one [...]

Slow Cookin’ Up a Storm

You see that?  You see my shiny new toy?  A wonderful, absolutely delightful Christmas present from my brother and my mother.  A Rival 6 quart (GINORMOUS) Crock Pot aka slow cooker.  It’s ginormous and I’ve spent the past few weekends creating lovely aromas and dishes from the thing.  Since it’s so huge, and I cook for one, I’ve been mostly making large batches and freezing leftovers.  The very first thing I made was actually pulled pork… which is kind of why I got a slow cooker to begin with, after I saw how easily I could recreate one of my [...]
