Birthday Week: Al Capone’s, Boston

HB and I had no leads on where to eat our last meal in Boston the following morning.  I tried searching online but let’s just say it wasn’t easy to find brunch or a decent breakfast in the area on a Wednesday morning.  So finally I found this place that boasted yummy breakfast and was walking distance, along the way to the bus terminal.  Hooray! These seasonal pancakes were available, though we didn’t opt to get them. Of course, when we got there, it was more “generic deli” that made breakfast – where I’d get a breakfast sandwich from, back [...]

Birthday Week: Finale (Desserts), Boston

Isn’t that cool?  This is what HB and I saw, walking back to our hotel from dinner… then to the dessert place.  Yes, after that hefty dinner, we had dessert.  Anyway, that’s what Morton’s in Boston looks like – a castle!  We had dessert at Finale. Though we were both super stuffed, HB decided that we had to get dessert since this place was literally a half a block from our hotel, and we were here.  We’d already decided to forego Toscanini’s ice cream because it was pretty far from our hotel, we were tired, and it was late.  So [...]

Birthday Week: Union Oyster House, Boston

After hours of shopping, we wound up at Union Oyster House, another place that had been suggested by HB’s friend.  When we approached, we got the sense that it was somewhat a tourist trap, but it looked fun, so we were game for some oysters and yumms… Unfortunately, we stopped ordering oysters after the first 6.  Gritty, dirty, flavorless… pretty darn blah.  We’d ordered these at the bar while waiting for our table; we wound up finishing up and not ordering more food till we got upstairs to our table. Immediately, we were served monstrous slabs of corn bread.  HB [...]

Birthday Week: Tealuxe, Boston

Boston & I have a very terse relationship.  I don’t like Boston. Boston doesn’t care. Despite knowing that, I decided to give Boston one more chance.  So when I decided to take a last minute birthday trip, Boston was still on the list of possibilities; I had my eye on trying Toscanini’s since reading about their burnt caramel ice cream on Serious Eats.  (I was in the midst of this caramel kick; salted caramel hot chocolates, salted caramel ice cream, …)  Boston won out over Philly (where I’ve been about a million times – it’s really rather close to NYC) and [...]

Recipe Fridays: Fancy Root Beer Float

Ok, so it’s a huge cop out.  I’ve got a lot going on this week, and want to get back to posting about my awesome ‘licious Birthday Week, and… well, take what I give ya I’ll confess here, though, that I tend to be a very plain and boring gal when it comes to certain things.  For example, root beer floats (did I mention I love root beer to bits and pieces and bits and pieces?  It’s one of the few caloried drinks I can’t keep myself from indulging in).  Root beer floats are made with vanilla ice cream.  Root [...]
