During our stroll to the (not very well stocked) comic book store on Austin Street after our afternoon movie this past Saturday, I noticed this place. Yet another natural yogurt place. I went in to check out the menu and prices.
I’m actually the worst person possible to discuss price comparisons since I’ve never actually gone to a yogurt place and bought yogurt (though I go with my friends so they can get some, I’ve only had random samples handed to me at grand openings or at the airport [I don’t know why, but there were people handing out samples at JFK when I was on my way to Buenos Aires back in February]). But there you go, clear photo of the prices, sizes, and flavors.
Here’s a sh*t picture of the toppings; didn’t seem like anything unusual or out of the ordinary (though “mochi” is called “rice cake” here). I was too full from lunch to even want to sample anything, but I was chatting with the two teenaged boys manning the counter (I asked if they had a menu I could take with me since I didn’t want to get anything just now, which, in hindsight, is totally weird, but they said no, so I asked if I could take a photograph of the menu and they said to be their guest). After I did, they asked if I wanted to sample any flavors, and I wasn’t too interested and finally said, “Well, what are your favorite flavors?” and the answers came quickly: blueberry for one, peach for the other. Without me asking, they each turned around really quickly and pulled me a large tasting of their respective favorite flavors. Amusing and very cute.
The verdict: peach was very refreshing and light; the tanginess of the yogurt went well against the light sweetness of the peach. The blueberry was also a surprise; it was purple in color yet did not have the cloyingly sweet taste one might associate with unnaturally purple foods. The taste was a bit overwhelming on a warm summer day as it was, though, and I had to tell the boys, when they asked, that peach had my vote for the day.
After that, the owner came out and was talking to me a bit about how they have other flavors they would be rolling out soon that I should come back to try, which is when I told him to please DO NOT MAKE COFFEE FLAVOR! Coffee and yogurt are two competing flavors that should not be mixed, ever!!! I had a sample at PinkBerry months ago and it was GROSS. I told him this and he laughed and said, “Don’t worry, we’re working on it now, ours will be better.” Ok, I’ll be back to see if that’s true…
It’s a cute shop and though I stand by my sentiments that I’m not that into this yogurt crazed fad, I welcome the addition to the neighborhood. Tasti-D-Lite is nearby, giving people options between the two (or Haagen Daaz, also nearby) for their after-movie delights. You might find me there occasionally… on my way to the comic shop a few stores down, or after a yummy meal at Corfu Grill (hopefully I’ll have left some room in my belly for it!).
Happy eating!
