Stay-cation 2008

I kind of hate the term, but since someone else coined it, whatever: I took all of last week off from work in order to take care of some personal business.  Taking vacation from work but not going anywhere is called “Stay-cation” now… Honestly, it feels weird to not go anywhere, but I am trying to save money, so it made sense.  Even though I still went out… as the pictures will show! Friday, June 20, lunch: Exactly the reason I avoided street meat for so long.  Yes, I had a tummy ache later.  This awful place on Water and [...]

New Pasteur

After having read about New Pasteur on Midtown Lunch’s Downtown Lunch feature, StB and I headed over that same day to check it out.  We’d both been to most of the Vietnamese restaurants on that block before, separately, and were both surprised that New Pasteur was the one most prominently featured in the entry and its comments. We opted to split, per my craving, an order of the summer rolls.  I liked that they gave us each our own dipping sauce because I am a liberal sauce dipper, and this meant I could double, triple, quadruple dip as much as [...]

Ice Cream Sandwich

Yet another non-recipe… I stole this idea from either Rachael, Giada, maybe even – gasp! – Sandra.  I just know that I’ve left the TV on with Food Network playing so much (in the past; don’t do that anymore!), that once upon a time, it got put in my head that hey, ice cream sandwiches are just softened ice cream, slapped between two cookies, and then frozen.  A week ago, I went into Duane Reade (Long’s, Genovese, CVS, Rite Aid, whatever’s in your town, same concept), and stumbled on these cookies for $1.50 a box of 10.  I was like, [...]

CityMeals on Wheels Creme de la Creme Charity Event

Wow! is all I can say. Click here.  Read the top, then scroll down to the last comments. *jumping up and down*  Yes, I won!  Me!  I won!  I WON!!!  The charity in question, by the way, CityMeals on Wheels, is an excellent organization that provides meals to those who are unable to leave their homes (the elderly, the bedridden), and is awesome.  I highly recommend them if you’re looking for a charity to donate money to.  A lot of money was raised last night for them, so I was happy to hear that I didn’t get to take pictures [...]

More Pasta

Not even a real recipe, but to prove I’ve been cooking here and there. Remember this?  Well, I’ve been making it once every other week or so since I first made it, but changing it slightly each time (and discovering the first time was actually the best…).  So… this was yet another go at it, with fire roasted tomatoes, a little bit of crushed red pepper, some frozen peas, and fresh-picked basil sliced on top.  Yes, I mixed it with ricotta afterwards, but it just didn’t have the oomph needed to carry this dish.  I’m afraid I will forever need [...]
