Back in August, ANM had chosen Pipa for a special brunch… but we discovered upon arrival the place was closed, and instead went to Le Pain Quotidien. Well, when faced with the task of choosing another place for brunch, ANM decided we should go to Pipa… (no, she’s not pregnant again! this was for ToCC’s birthday)
I was espcially excited to try their Mexican hot chocolate with churros, but alas, t’was not to be; they didn’t have any unfortunately. But the waiter assured me they usually do. Boo.
KoCC’s order of the endive leaves with figs and bacon… I didn’t get to try any, but I didn’t hear anyone saying EWWW so I’m sure it was lovely.
KoCC’s order of calamari… yum, these were good, slightly sticky, chewy in just the right way, and a sweet glaze. I snagged a few pieces and found them very tasty, as did B.
Someone’s salad… tasty
KoCC’s “The Pipa” – two eggs, two pacakes, home fries, and choice of chorizo or bacon. Looks pretty good!
ANM’s sandwich… I know she liked this… and I can tell it’s hers because I see baby food by the plate, haha.
MK’s huevos ranchero. I think she liked them.
SW’s salad; she said “I don’t know what’s so special about it, it’s just like a chicken Caesar salad!”
(You may notice the excess of photos without people’s opinions. I’m sorry! this is the group of friends that I didn’t realize had no clue I blogged about food… and they all found out fairly recently about it, so they were all eager to take pictures of their dishes for me to share, but I forgot to ask them for details – because usually for birthday meals with them, I only take pictures of whatever’s near me – it’s a large group, you see!)
B’s French toast. He requested the honeyed cream cheese on the side (mostly for me since I wanted to try it). I know he really liked this dish, scarfing it down (and later telling me he was still hungry; B is NOT a big eater, so this was surprising). I liked the fruit – the blackberries in particular were super sweet and delicious. The honeyed cream cheese came in handy…
My eggs benedict with smoked salmon. This was really good, although it claimed to have creme fraiche somewhere, I didn’t find any. I liked this dish even more spread with the honeyed cream cheese, kind of like a fancy pants version of a lox bagel, haha. It was tasty, but I was also still hungry afterwards.
We also had pitchers of sangria… otherwise, this would have been an extremely cheap meal; the most expensive entree seemed to be $10-12. Though no one else seemed to share the exact same sentiments, I was definitely still hungry afterwards. The sangria was pleasant, not cloyingly sweet nor too dry, well done.
Yvo says: While the place was cute, quaint (and filled with chandeliers for sale at horrific prices), and the prices cheap, I wonder about how many dishes I’d have to order before I was full for brunch. (Please don’t tell me the above were brunch tapas plates. Come on.) I liked it enough that I’ll probably go again one day for brunch – it wasn’t packed on a Saturday morning, which is always a plus for me, I hate waiting – but I can’t say it was outstanding or mind blowing. Although I will be attempting to make honeyed cream cheese sometime – that was pretty damn good.
