I am a huge fan of Adrienne’s. Though I’ve “only” posted on it twice, I go there frequently with my coworkers for a quick lunch; I’ve gone there for dinners; I’ve actually even once gone by myself for a solo dinner that turned out to be oh-so-delicious… I love this place. I don’t even like pizza that much, but this place just does it right.
Since I first began going to Adrienne’s, I’ve known that the person who opened it actually first opened a place in Forest Hills, Queens. I grew up in Forest Hills, but I’d never been to this place! I was all excited and have wanted to try it for a while, but never had the right set of circumstances for me to go. I’ve moved back into the neighborhood and I think I’m even within delivery range (YAY!), so I finally headed over a few nights ago to give their pizza try. Would it hold up?
I was initially surprised to see that Nick’s is about as un-trendy as Adrienne’s is when it came to the interior design. Where Adrienne’s is almost sexy, sleek, a great date place despite being essentially a fancy pizzeria, Nick’s is, well, a pizza parlor. A neighborhood pizza joint. I was intrigued.
Eating with a vegetarian generally poses a problem with a carnivore like me, but we had no problems deciding. I love getting mushrooms and sausage on pies at Adrienne’s, so we decided on mushrooms for comparative purposes, and peppers and onions, cuz, well, they’re delicious.
For some reason, I’d been expecting the rectangular pie Adrienne’s is so famous for, but was pleased to see the standard 10″ round (Adrienne’s only makes these at night).
I also noticed that the mushrooms at Adrienne’s (spread so liberally on the entire pie) appear to be cooked before being topped on the pizza; these appeared to have been raw before being popped in the oven. Other than that, the fresh mozzarella, the super thin crust, fresh basil topping the pizza… all very good. My slices were a bit soggy with oil around the tip, and got cold very quickly (but then, I admit I was busy talking), but were delicious nonetheless.
Overall, Adrienne’s gets first mover advantage (in my world, since I went there first) and will remain my favorite (and I’m much more often within a block of the place than I am to Nick’s!), but Nick’s is similar enough that I can envision myself here on a regular basis. Hopefully they deliver to me, which would make it even better! Also, around the corner from Nick’s is a fairly well stocked Japanese market (bento stuff!) so I can definitely see myself going back sooner than you’d think.
***I don’t think Nick’s serves anything besides pizza, which is a change from Adrienne’s, which boasts delicious pastas and meatballs. Also, Nick’s serves this really good root beer… I can’t remember the name, but it’s a small brewery, not a widely distributed one… PACKED with caffeine.
Yvo says: I don’t know about destination pizza – although it IS extremely close to Manhattan via train, and close to the train station as well – but I definitely like the pizza here enough to become a regular, despite the standard/passing pizza place that’s only a block from my apartment. I would definitely love to order from here and see how it stands up to the stresses of delivery – which Adrienne’s cannot, the one time I ordered from them and lived literally a block away, it took forEVER and the pizza that came was cold and just unappetizing, to say the least. I’ll keep you updated!
