While it’s true I’ve been here quite a number of times, and have taken pictures (yes, my brother’s food blog, though I used his camera and took many of those pictures- that appears to be before or around the time I was discovering flash is no good)… I’ve never formally reviewed this place. It’s the first place I ever had shabu shabu outside of my home! Anyway, this isn’t really a review so much as a run down of what’s what.
In cold weather, as I always mention when I talk about shabu shabu, I love shabu shabu. I love it anyway, because it’s mostly healthy, and it warms you up deep inside, and it’s cheap, and… I love it. I grew up with it. It also falls into the category of comfort food for me, when I’m not feeling well, so during my recent bout of gastroenteritis, Cookie asked me if I was up for shabu shabu, and I was just like, oh hell yea. So, off we went to Flushing…
Bubbling pot filled with yummy “freebie” goodies (what’s included), double portion of the non-vegetarian items because Cookie is vegetarian.
Plate of veggies and glass noodles.
My sauce concoction: raw egg, cilantro, scallions, soy sauce, sesame oil, sha cha sauce, and maybe a splash of something else…?
Additional order of udon. Man, this is NOT udon, and it wasn’t worth the extra $1.
My order of beef. I like Quickly better because I can order sirloin instead, which doesn’t fall apart as easily- these thin slices of beef tend to fall apart where the fat melts off.
Cookie’s additional orders of vegetarian items: tofu skin, tofu, ennochi mushrooms, and Napa cabbage. I believe these were about 75c-$1 each.
All in all, a good meal, and super cheap – I think it came out to about $10 a person before tax and tip. Totally soothing and feel good meal for someone who grew up dipping thinly sliced meats into rolling boiling broth, dipping the meat into a sauce and then popping it into her mouth.
Yvo says: Not the worst option out there, and not the best either. I definitely like Minni’s for its familiarity and deliciousness, but I can’t say it’s stand out either way. The service on this day was particularly horrible, as they forgot half our order, but I had a good time and the food didn’t offend my sick stomach. Ups and downs I suppose.
