Whoops, forgot to take a picture of the outside once again…
For PB’s birthday this past weekend, she chose a pretty funky-fun looking place: Maroons Restaurant. The website lauded it as Caribbean meets Southern meets Soul meets Cajun, and I was really excited about the po’boys, the red velvet cake (which, as you can see, I’ve been into lately), and all the various offerings on hand!
AND ordered the gumbo to start, and found it kind of bland, nothing interesting. He said it was a teensy bit spicy but nothing that great, and it looked kind of watery from where I was sitting, next to him. He seemed unenthused, and I became worried. (Per usual, this was a large group birthday dinner, so instead of forcibly taking pictures of everyone’s food, I stuck to those right near me, and I was mostly off duty!)
MK sat across from me, and we decided to order appetizers to split, one from the Jamaican/Caribbean side of the menu, and one from the Southern side of the menu. So above is the cod fish croquettes (her choice), slightly blurry because I don’t know why. We were both disappointed with this; filled with lots of corn bread crumbs, very little chewy fish, and covered in a very sticky sweet sauce, we were not impressed at all. It was nothing of what we thought and hoped it might be. The meal was not off to a good start.
I managed to take a good picture of our fried green tomatoes, which I’d never had before. I kind of thought “fried” like in a pan, not breaded/deep fried, as these appeared to be, but I found these really quite yummy. The spicy remoulade (as the menu called it) was wayyy too spicy for me, and I dipped very sparingly (and wound up ordering an orange soda to cool my tongue; when it came, I forgot to snap a photo, but it was a brand I’d never seen before, with “Jamaican brewed” written on it). The outside crust was crunchy, and the interior of the raw/under-ripe tomatoes stood up well to being fried in this manner. Almost like an apple or potato, but better. Things were looking up!
I managed to try someone’s jerk chicken wing appetizer – more flat out spicy than jerked; and someone’s fried chicken wings – pretty good.
Though I’d wanted to try the po’boy, I’m really not into cooked oysters and someone said “Oh, the fried chicken is supposed to be mad good here,” and so I ordered accordingly. MK also ordered this, with a double order of mac & cheese, while I opted to get succotash. Unfortunately, when they came, both had a double order of mac & cheese, so the waitress brought me a separate plate of succotash, which in my memory was corn niblets and lima beans…
I actually really liked my succotash (and it’s made an appearance in at least two bentos now), and ate most of it very quickly. I was feeling full, though, and only ate a bit of the very boring fried chicken; it was nothing special, and even a bit – dare I say it – dry. I had some of it in a bento (Monday’s) and it was still only alright; I was really looking forward to it, and found myself extremely disappointed. I’m probably going to eat the rest of it tonight, so we’ll see how that fares… The mac & cheese was over peppered and basically elbow macaroni with cheese dumped on top and melted. With lots of cracked black pepper. That is so not mac & cheese! Gahhh!
And then there was the red velvet cake, so droolingly ordered, so looked forward to… so wonderfully anticipated… my friends even looked forward to it because I told them about the last slice I’d had, how moist it was, delicate and chocolatey, so delicious… and utter disappointment. Super dense, the frosting had hardened over into an oversweet shell. Bah. I was incredibly unhappy with it and ate a couple of bites before giving up.
Yvo says: So much promise, great premise, but no delivery! Complete failure! I was so disappointed to find that everything was mostly blah, and most of the other guests felt the same way. The service was good, but the place was super cramped and crowded. Not good for crowds, and the food was just really not that great at all. Boo.
complete disappointment, not recommended at all

I feel your pain, but have more to add. After researching restaurants on the Internet, my friends and I found this place. Food sounded good and we love Village restaurants. Boy were we disappointed. We arrived at 7:30 and they had an empty room of tables, but they made us wait until 8 to be seated. Service was extremely slow. We didn’t get our food until 9:15, after all of the other tables were served their appetizers and food and these were 3 large parties. One table , the table next to us which was a birthday party, was also finished with their dinner before we received our food. Their cake even arrived before our food and they were seated at the same time as we were. We just ordered food. We had to rush as we had a 10:00 train and had to get to midtown by then. When we complained, we were treated rudely and told that we had to wait. They only reason we stayed is because we had no choice if we wished to eat before we went home. The food was average and the service was horrible. We will never go to this restaurant ever again.

I went here when this place first opened and the food used to be really really good. The owner would walk around and chat and there was a very homey feeling about the whole place. Over time Maroons has taken a steep downhill dive in both quality of food an quality of service. Everyone is squeezed in, the service is so slow and the food is not nearly as it once was. The last time I went here was the final straw. There was a rather large group of us for a private event. They would not allow us to sit until all 25 people arrived. The butchered orders and were plain rude. The even had the gall to kick us out even though some people were still eating because it took them so long to bring the food out. Feisty Foodie–never again.

I think it really is all personal preference. I couldn’t disagree with you more about Maroons. It has been a Southern main stay for over 10 years. In this city…it’s good food that keeps a place going! Being from the south I find Maroons’ food spot on. The fried chicken is done to perfection as are the collard greens and yams! You have to understand this cuisine! As far as the Jamaican Codfish fritters- that sticky sauce you describe…is a delicious honey-ginger sauce which is sublime with the crispy fritters, which I have always found to be full of soft delicate fish.Work through the wonderful menu Maroons offers and you will begin to understand their food. And don’t forget to order the Jerk pork or chicken. I have never had it better.
