cubes of tuna, flakes of prosciutto, in a canteloupe cloud
A few weeks ago, we went to this tapas restaurant for a fairly large group dinner. On the menu is something called “The Whole Shebang”- you can order the entire menu for $330. The menu recommends this for 7 people, or less “if you’re really hungry”, but we opted not to go with this after seeing some of the selections were things none of us really wanted to eat (nuts).

Though I didn’t even try to capture all of the food with my camera (I was off-duty!), I wanted to recommend this restaurant because unlike many tapas places I’ve been to in NYC, the portions were fairly generous and for the most part, way more than enough for sharing. We had about 9 people at the table, and I managed to try nearly everyone’s dishes. The food was good, not quite strictly Spanish, but delicious none the less. I particularly enjoyed the fork smashed potatoes (similar to the lazy latkes I posted about a few weeks ago), and the cauliflower.

Usually, when I go out for tapas with a large group of people, I wind up still hungry afterwards and irritated/cranky that I’ve been nibbling for hours but am still hungry. I wasn’t stuffed at the end of this meal, but I was satisfied, I’d had a wide variety of dishes, and they were good. I think it still came out to about $40 or so per person, with no drinks, but I had a good time and the place was very nice.

Hi! This is Sarah from the dumpling party. Alta is one of my favorite places–Brian and I like to sit at the bar and get the “fish and chips” and multiple orders of the smelts. Their menu has a fun, sort of offbeat quality to it that I like, and they also carry wines from unusual places. I had a Hungarian wine that I really liked. Anyway, cool blog–I enjoyed looking through it. I hope to see you at more events soon!
