For our venerable president’s birthday, she chose to indulge in good ‘ol comfort food. I was excited to try this place because it sounded very yummy.. and fatty. Which is always comforting
No appetizers this time… just the good stuff.
jerk chicken wings with jicama strips // barbeque baked beans & collard greens
texas brisket with pickled beets, corn & peas // bbq ribs, chicken, pulled pork with fries & grilled asparagus
chicken fried chicken with onion strings & mashed potatoes // buttermilk fried 1/2 chicken with onion strings & mashed potatoes
bbq combo of chicken, ribs and texas brisket with mac&cheese and grilled asparagus
(my dish)
I only managed to eat some of my brisket, my ribs, the asparagus and most of the mac&cheese before I was stuffed to the gills. The brisket I found to be a little dry, but “Hungry” next to me said hers was okay, in fact she said it was better than R.U.B.’s! They had house BBQ sauce in containers on the table- one ketchup based which I liked a lot (smoky, with a touch of honey in it), and a vinegar based one that I didn’t try because it looked really watery (and yellow), and I prefer BBQ sauce that sticks to my food. COMFORT FOOD! My ribs were really good, not too moist but definitely not overdry, they pulled right off the bone. The asparagus was yummy, grilling really brings out the flavor and natural sweetness and helps retain the crunch.
The mac&cheese, which I was really eager to try since I’d read good reviews of it on MenuPages, was actually a touch too sharp for me. From the way it tasted, I think they used a sharp white cheddar, a bit of parmesan perhaps? It had that slight edge of bitter, while I prefer my mac&cheese creamy, smooth and a touch sweet. It was cute, served in its individual baked crock, but just not what I really prefer for mac&cheese.
Spoony commented that her pulled pork wasn’t working for her- perhaps it was too dry? because I saw her liberally dipping in the BBQ sauce.
Shaker enjoyed her chicken fried chicken, but added that the onion rings eventually got too greasy for her and made her nauseous.
Blinky noted that her 22-minute-fried-chicken did not take 22 minutes, despite the warning on the menu (perhaps we got there early enough?), and was really delicious. She said it wasn’t overly greasy and yumm… I think she only finished half of it.
Stalker did not make any comments on her jerk chicken wings (no “my chicken isn’t jerked!” this time), so I could only guess that they were alright but not fantastic.
banana eskimo pie
top layer of fudge = too much, but the rest was super yummy!
Overall, an enjoyable meal, but most of us would not return because of the location (closest train is the 1).
Yvo says: If you’re in the area, solidly good food. If you’re not, you probably want to take a pass (unless you REALLY like comfort food and go out of your way to get it). The notable thing was the flavored lemonades; Stalker ordered a jalapeno lemonade, which she said was spicy; Blinky ordered a watermelon lemonade which she seemed to enjoy, and Shaker had another lemonade whose name I didn’t catch. We were too busy gabbing away to talk about the food
